Fangirl’s Guide to Hugh Laurie

Hugh Laurie, really? Yes, he isn’t an Avenger, doesn’t slay people his age, and doesn’t play a doctor named “Who,” but he was able to create one of the best television characters ever. House isn’t a real person, but he could be. Out of all the doctors out there, there might be one who walks with a limp, is a complete asshole, and can solve any medical mystery after seeing a bowling ball roll down an alley into a butterfly. But since we don’t know where this person is in reality, we gladly settle on Laurie’s House. Hugh himself is quite the catch and those who noticed him before 2004, kudos to you — as for the rest of us, we weren’t sure of this piece of (older) man candy until Fox gave our Monday nights a reason.

Best Known For

House is the main course of this piece, but rest assured there are appetizers when it comes to Hugh Laurie. Before he came to be a household (no pun intended) name in America, he was a well-known star in the UK in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s with shows like A Bit of Fry and Laurie and Jeeves and Wooster. Some Americans might’ve noticed Hugh in the Stuart Little series as the patriarch of the clan, or as one of the bad guys in the live action remake of 101 Dalmatians in the late ‘90s (fact: only movie in theaters I’ve ever fell asleep to… sorry Hugh!). It wasn’t until 2004 that his career really took off in the US when he scored the lead role in House (obviously). From there he went on to lend his voice to feel good family flicks like Monsters vs. Aliens, Arthur Christmas, and Hop.

Reasons You Love House

I’ve been around girls who love Hugh Laurie and it’s quite amazing this man in his early 50s is seen as a heartthrob among women from as young as their 20s to Hugh’s age and older. Every age group has their reasoning. Young women are into that older man because as House he’s a smart ass who has a rebellious side that they can’t help but fall for. Older women see that rebellion as well, but they also love the charm that House can turn on in an instant. When it boils down to it though, all ages love Hugh for his role on House, and when they take their fandom off screen and love the man behind the character, they get doe-eyed at Hugh’s musical abilities and, of course, his British accent. What woman can deny a man who is a bad boy musician with a heart melting way with words? Not many.

Reasons I Love House

I had dedicated my Monday nights to Hugh Laurie and Co. from the start in the fall of ’04. Sadly, House is no more and has since moved on to the syndication of my heart, but I will always love that show and the man who made it so. It’s weird to think that at the tender age of 17 I was head over heels for a man who was the same age as my mom, but I was and to this day my mom still thinks I’m a sick freak because of it. Yes, I drool over Hugh’s physical appearance, despite the aged bald spot that thankfully the people of House were able to cover up on the show. I can’t deny the allure of his baby blues or the way his facial scruff makes me yearn to be his wife, but it’s not only his looks that made me love him. I was and still am attracted to the character of House so much so that I wish I wish my mom would’ve put me in acting when I was little so I could’ve at least played one of his ladies of the night in an episode or two. So why do I love Hugh Laurie? Easy, he’s ruggedly handsome and played a man who had a punk rock, screw everybody, I do what I want, when I want mentality… even if that does involve being a pill popper who usually screws up with normal human interaction all the time.
