I’m working on an article for FilmSchoolRejects about female action figures, and as a consequence I’ve been delving back into my toybox to dig out some old action figures I’ve had for quite a while. I did some new photo shoots for them and will be dropping a few retro-reviews up here today to show these ladies off to anybody who might have missed them the first time around. The first up is Moore Action Collectibles’ Vampirella action figure.
Back in the late ’90s / early ’00s, Clayburn Moore ran Moore Action Collectibles, an action figure division of what would become the modern day Moore Creations. MAC had the very first license for Buffy the Vampire Slayer action figures that Diamond Select Toys eventually inherited. They also produced toys based on Chaos Comics characters, Darkchylde, Top Cow properties, and more. One of their more alluring pieces was the Vampirella action figure.
Vampirella came out with numerous variations. There was the standard red-outfit Vampirella shown here, as well as a Halloween special edition that featured Vampirella in a black outfit with a cape. That one also featured a blood-red moon as part of the display base. And finally, there was a limited edition figure variation with a new head featuring the likeness of longtime Vampirella model Julie Strain.
All three versions of the figure came with a really cool and detailed graveyard display base that included an attachable cross tombstone with a big moon for a backdrop. They also came with a wooden stake, a crossbow, and a pistol as accessories. In scale with MAC’s other releases, Vampirella stands about 5.5″ tall. She’s poseable at the neck, shoulders, and wrists. They chose to keep her legs immobile to preserve the sculpting at the hips. The head and wrist joints are well hidden in the sculpt, and the shoulder joints are just simple pivot joints.
Overall, this is a fantastic representation of the character and a really great looking action figure. It’s no wonder, considering the amazing pieces Clayburn Moore has produced in his statue lines in the years after his foray into action figures.
