I’m with you on 24. It just doesn’t feel as weighted as it used to. I blame some of that on the perpetually rotating cast the past few seasons. They kill everyone off and who are you left to care about? Jack, who is the star and therefore safe, and Chloe, who is barely even present, relegated to being apart of the CTU backdrop. For the first several seasons we had characters we cared about and now they are all practically gone.
I will say, however, (and this is something I always bring up when discussing 24) that this series is best viewed marathon style. I have seen every season and since season 4 I have been watching each week as they air. They lose their sense of urgency when you watch a single day unfold over the course of 5 months. Case in point, I did a rewatch of seasons 1-6 last winter and when I got to the dreaded season 6…it was so much better than I remembered! It wasn’t super awesome fantastic or anything, but it just played so much better watching the episode back-to-back-to-back.
And let’s face it, when you go from season 1 family kidnappings to season 6 where nukes are dropping on American soil…I mean, come on. Where else can you go from there? Things don’t get more dire than that! :p
Anyway, oops. Didn’t mean to ramble on about it. So, yeah…great podcast! (And I really, really enjoyed the last episode of Fringe and Lost will always rule me, at least until it ends. :D)
All very good points! Jason and I agree about the new characters thing (we talked about it after you commented) — we wanted to like the new characters but they quickly gave us reasons not to like so many of them (Hassan, Dana) or just haven’t given us reasons to care at all.
I still haven’t seen S6 (or 1-3) but maybe eventually I’ll watch it marathon-style. I prefer watching TV that way anyway. I do kind of think 24 works better that way as long as you can forget about the ridiculous idea that this all takes place in one day. Over the course of several months, it’s easier to forget/justify in your head, but it’s really kind of silly. Still awesome, though. =)
