If so, you’re just what the Whedon Universe event track at Dragon*Con is looking for. They’ve announced a fan art contest that will be judged by votes at the convention, and you’ll have a chance of winning some surely spiffy but as-of-yet unspecified prizes.

Joss Whedon has been toiling away in his secret lab for the past several months on a new and innovative project called Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog. It’s a web-only musical in three parts, starring Neil Patrick Harris, Felicia Day, and Nathan Fillion, and the first act is now online, free to view for a limited time. What are you waiting for? Go watch it! I promise it’s all kinds of awesome.
Joss Whedon has been building a monster ever since the writer’s strike earlier this year, and now that monster has a trailer. It’s called Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, and it’s going to be a three part musical series shown on the internet. In the words of Whedon, “It’s the story of a low-rent super-villain, the hero who keeps beating him up, and the cute girl from the laundromat he’s too shy to talk to.” The cast includes Nathan Fillion as the heroic Captain Hammer, Felicia Day (best known as one of the potential Slayers from the final season of Buffy) as Penny, and Neil Patrick Harris in the title role of Dr. Horrible. Here’s a look at the trailer:
The latest issue in the comic book season 8 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer released this week, and it’s the final issue in Drew Goddard’s Wolves at the Gate arc, a story that delivers a number of gut punches and classic moments for a series that truly has transcended its television and movie origins. Spoilers and a review after the jump.
DigitalSpy has a new interview with Anthony Stewart Head, in which they ask him about the status of the much rumored and long delayed spinoff from Buffy the Vampire Slayer that would focus on his character, Giles. Previously he’s mentioned that the spinoff would be produced by the BBC and would be called Ripper. Beyond that, details have been sketchy. It doesn’t sound like things have gotten a lot closer to actually happening, but it’s always good to hear that the project is still in the realm of maybe-possibly. Here’s what ASH had to say about Ripper:
“The latest is that I was over in LA last year at about this time. I bumped into Julie Gardner from BBC Wales who said ‘has anything ever happened to that?’ And at the same time I had just been speaking to Joss [Whedon] saying that there are a lot of people who keep asking about it. He said ‘Is there anybody at the BBC I can talk to about it?’ so I introduced him to Julie Gardner and they got on very well… and then the writers’ strike happened and Fox picked up an idea of his called Dollhouse that he’s doing with Eliza Dushku. So the answer is that there is a possibility of something happening… the story that he’s written could adapt to being a one-off story not necessarily related to Buffy. All that means that there is the will and there is the means. It’s a question of how, when and if it [comes together] through the next year or so… All I can say is that it’s a ghost story. But a ghost story with a real Joss Whedon difference. It’s got such a twist to it. But I wouldn’t want to give it away. It would be the worst spoiler of all time.”
This thing will get made, if the BBC knows what’s good for ‘em.
The second issue of Joss Whedon’s new Serenity prequel series hit this week, and it continues an unsettlingly upbeat tale of the Firefly class ship and her crew. I say it’s unsettling because this series actually see them in the midst of some good luck, while I’m used to seeing them bloody, foiled, and occasionally dead. But, as the title suggests, this series is all about seeing the crew in better days, and it’s been an enjoyable first two issues. The second issue is worth checking out even if only on the merit of one panel regarding Book. Read on for the review (with spoilers).
Following the story from March 30 about Jewel Staite mentioning a new Firefly box set release, there is now confirmation from Fox Home Entertainment that this release will be on Blu-Ray. This will mark the first home video release of the Firefly series on a high-def format. There is no release date set, and no other details have been announced yet.
MySpace Comic Books has a three page preview of Buffy the Vampire Slayer #16 online. This is the first issue featuring art by Karl Moline and looks to be the beginning of a new story arc. Check out the preview, but be warned that there’s a little bit of hype-type spoilage for the issue.
The cast of Joss Whedon’s upcoming series Dollhouse continues to grow with the addition of Tahmoh Penikett, best known as Helo on SciFi’s Battlestar Galactica. Penikett will play Paul Smith, a romantic foil to Eliza Dushku’s Echo. Also new to the cast list are Dichen Lachman and Enver Gjokaj.
