Much discussion about characters not seen, but the key players all showed up! With a growing problem of invading archangels, Heaven losing power, and the whole Lucifer situation, the Winchesters need all the help they can get. I just hope their allies make it in time.
Note: This recap may contain spoilers!
We saw the return of Rowena, this time all powered-up and ready to go. But her mission, it seems, is a bit more selfless than usual. Yes, she’s killing people in quite spectacular ways, but they were morally-corrupt to begin with. And, yes, she’s taking Reapers down in the process, but it’s all to provoke Death to have a meeting with her. She’s not looking for power or to rule the world. In the end, she just wants her son back. Her regrets are many and to find out that Crowley is dead has set her over the edge. She wants to make things right.
Well, selfless mission or not, taking people out before their time can have detrimental, cascading effects worldwide. That’s why the Reaper Jessica makes herself known. She’s been hanging around the boys ever since she met up with Dean the first time, but now it’s important that she lend them a hand and stop Rowena’s killing spree before it’s too late. It was Sam’s action of giving Rowena the page out of the book that allowed her power to grow in the first place. And it seems like it’s Sam who will be her end as well, since every book of Rowena’s death shows she’s always killed by Sam Winchester.
The entire relationship between Rowena and the Winchesters, and the relationship she has with Sam in particular, is interesting. When Billie calls her bluff and urges her to kill Sam, Rowena cannot do it. In earlier days, she might have, but she has been changed by what has happened to her. Both she and the Winchesters have known loss and regret, but they also know that redemption is possible. She will have to go up against her torturer, Lucifer, and potentially see a lot of destruction around her, but her fate will always end at Sam’s hands unless they can change their destiny. It’s both a hopeful and hopeless realization.
Up above, Cas is working his own angle on gaining help. Yes, his fellow brothers and sisters pretty much hate him, but this is a dire situation. Maybe they will listen to him if he returns to Heaven and lays out the details of Lucifer and Michael and all the rest. What he finds, instead, is disarray and defeat. Indra is guarding the door to Heaven, but he’s also ready to just give up. Dumah is just about at her wit’s end, too, and thinks that they might be able to work a deal with Cas. But it’s the surprise return of Naomi that brings it all together. Having her head impaled was only a minor setback. But despite the tumultuous relationship she and Cas have, they must work together if they hope to preserve Heaven.
We knew the situation with the angels was dire. And seeing the power cycling on and off doesn’t bode well either. However, it’s not until Naomi reveals their numbers that it becomes abundantly clear how very much in danger they are of becoming extinct altogether. There are nine angels in total up in Heaven, and only one or two still on Earth. Ten angels to power Heaven and rule over everything? Not good odds for their continuation, especially since Lucifer’s in charge and not looking to be repopulating the family anytime soon. That’s why Gabriel’s return is even more important. Not only do the Winchesters need him to help open the rift to the other world, and potentially help in defeating Lucifer, but the angels need him up in Heaven to help power the place. That is one sought-after archangel! Let’s just hope he returns sometime soon to lend a hand. Otherwise, the world is in grave danger.
