Leading up to the finale, we saw a few problems get solved, but a few more get revealed. And with sacrifices made left and right, it was clear that when the world is coming to an end, the Winchesters would once again be responsible for saving it.

Mary’s brainwashed missions continued on, as she took out more hunters at the command of the British Men of Letters, and next up on her list was Jody. Too bad Dean and Sam were stuck inside the bunker and couldn’t be alerted to the danger posed. But never let it be said that the boys couldn’t come up with a solution when it seems like none exists. First up, the magical solution. Need a way to break the bonds on their home? Find a spell in the vast library at their disposal. Need a way to purify their blood so it’s re-virginized? Try another spell! Hybrid magic to the rescue.
Or not. Ketch already thought about the magic aspect, so their plans of escape through that route were a no-go. But where magic fails, old fashioned strength and determination can help out instead. They could keep whacking at the concrete wall off to the side and see if they could get through to the sewer pipe, but they don’t have the time or energy it would take to do so before their air runs out. If only they had some kind of weapon that could bust through the wall quicker. And that’s when, finally, Dean gets to use the grenade launcher from the Impala’s trunk that he’s been drooling over for years. A little worse for wear, thanks to getting his leg messed up from the impact, but at least the boys are free again. And it’s time to save their friends.
Garth isn’t dead yet, as confirmed by Dean getting him on the phone, but Jody’s not answering and they take it to mean she’s in danger. Racing over to her house, they find a bloody trail leading into the living room, but at least Jody’s still alive with Alex helping to patch up her bruises and other wounds. Mama Winchester, however, is tied up and out of her right mind. Hopes of returning her to the Mary Winchester we knew and loved seems to be for naught, since Toni lied and claims she cannot reset Mary’s programming. Oh, but she can. Dean’s going to make sure of that. He’s not going to be giving up on his mother so easily.
I liked how they split Dean and Sam’s storylines for this. Sam, who has followed Dean’s lead for many of their missions, has the experience and skills to be a fine leader for this planned mission against the British Men of Letters. His speech during their time in the bunker, where he mentions he fell for the Men of Letters company line because he found following easier than leading, was the touch-point for this. And with Dean’s leg busted up, it’s a perfect opportunity for Sam to lead the remaining hunters into battle and take on an organization that has destroyed their lives for too long. Sure, there were deaths along the way, but in the end Sam, Jody, and the reduced hunter group persevered.
Meanwhile, Dean has an important mission all on his own. He is going to save Mary and get his mother back, even if that means getting into her head to do it. The walk through past memories, the emotional face-off where Dean tells Mary he hates her for what her choices did to his and Sam’s lives, and the final moment where it looks like Dean is finally getting through to her was a fine piece of acting from Jensen Ackles. And the tense final moments, where Ketch broke in and finally Mary woke up to save Dean, was a fitting end to the British Men of Letters storyline.
One enemy down, one more to go. Dean, Sam, and Mary cannot rest easy on a job well done because Lucifer is out and ready to take over the world. He may be the ultimate enemy, but he’s no match for the Winchesters. Determination and strength will carry them through. And a family hug to end the episode readies them for the battle ahead.
