Supernatural 14.07 – “Unhuman Nature” Recap

Jack’s struggling with his slow march towards death, Dean’s got something going on with the remnants of Michael that still hasn’t been explained, and Nick’s calling up an old buddy that we all thought was long gone. So many mysteries, so little answers as of yet.

Note: This recap may contain spoilers!

Jack is dying! I don’t think I can handle this, and it seems his adoptive fathers are feeling the same way. When normal medicine fails, magic has often served a purpose. I loved seeing Rowena back, and I understand her hatred to all things Lucifer, but the power of Jack’s shiny personality always wins you over. Too bad even her powers weren’t able to save him. I appreciate that they’re doing all they can do save their boy, but I fear the solution is going to be at a high cost.

So, I totally get that Jack’s lack of grace would make his body go into chaos. And I had a bit of a thrill when I learned they would use Gabriel’s grace to try and fix him. I still hold out hope that Gabriel isn’t really dead, so any mention of him is alright with me. I can’t fault Sergei for his assertion that he not get involved. He is a neutral entity, supplying the spell and the grace in return for a favor to be called in later. Just because Cas is frantic over Jack’s downturn doesn’t mean Sergei is any more motivated. Whatever solution they find for Jack, it’s got to be on their own.

Dean is taking the whole situation hard, which is understandable. He was suspicious of Jack for so long and now Jack has become Dean’s adopted son. To lose him after all this is not easy for Dean to accept. But he’s going to make what little time Jack has left well-spent, which is what Jack wants. It’s not about exotic locations, but spending time with the people you love. Dean teaches his boy to drive, takes him out for food, and they have a fishing trip. I really loved that Jack chose that because he remembers Dean saying he and John did that and Jack knew it was his happiest memory.

It’s also clear that something’s going on with Dean. He keeps fading out, like Michael’s pulling him somewhere. I don’t think the archangel’s done with him yet, and I don’t think another archangel is as done as we thought, thanks to Nick. I don’t know if he had these anger issues before Lucifer, but Nick is certainly working through them now. He’s taken out Arty, he took out the priest through crucifixion, and finally he took out the cop, Frank Kellogg, when Nick learned that it was through Frank’s hands that his wife and child died. Nick understands possession, and he now has a name to blame – Abraxas. But that does not lift the burden off of Frank, so Nick makes sure he pays just as the others had to.

And finally we see the twist that I felt had to be coming, but it doesn’t alleviate the dread any. Nick’s anger and rage hasn’t gone away, even though he killed everyone responsible for his family’s murders. He likes killing and he liked the numbness that Lucifer provided him. So, Nick prays and begs and he manifests the return of Lucifer through sheer will. And what I fear will happen is that Lucifer has to play the key role in saving Jack. His boy is dying, no other archangel’s grace has saved him, so it might fall to the father to save the son. I don’t want it to happen, but it just might. And what a destructive future we have to look forward to if it does. Oh, Supernatural, you’re so good at keeping us on our toes as to what will happen next!

About the Author
In her youth, Kimberly could be found in the library, devouring books that covered everything from WWII History to Dr. McCoy's latest adventures aboard the Enterprise, with some X-Men thrown in for good measure. Saturdays were often reserved for PBS re-runs of Doctor Who and Red Dwarf. More recently, she's been riding along with the Winchester brothers, and she hopes the Impala doesn't run out of gas for a long time.
