In the latest episode of Supernatural, the Winchesters got to check in with old friends and go up against old enemies. While the threat is still ongoing, this particular case did have a wrap-up that Dean is never going to let anyone forget. Or, at least he won’t let Sammy forget.

It was good to see them returning to the Thules again, showing that the storyline is not dead yet and still isn’t dead by the end of the episode. This is a long-standing evil that will take a while to eradicate. But at least we got to see that Aaron Bass is still carrying on his grandfather’s legacy. We might yet revisit him and his Golem when we catch wind of more Thule Society plans in the future.
I will admit that any other show saying “yeah, we’re going to try to resurrect Hitler” would be seen as a joke. On Supernatural, we just accept it as something that could possibly happen in the world of the Winchesters because crazy things like this happen to them all the time. That’s why I liked Sam’s attempt at a supporting talk with Ellie. Sure, it sucks that she learned she was adopted, was a blood relation to Hitler, and was going to possibly be used to house the resurrected soul of the Nazi leader, but Sam’s been there. His issues and emotional trauma runs deep with the demon blood and Lucifer’s vessel thing, so he can help her work through and fight against what destiny had planned for her.
What I really liked most of all was the embodiment of Hitler through Commandant Nauhaus’s meatsuit. Okay, Nauhaus was never going to let Hitler be in the body of an American female, I get that, and he wanted that power all on his own. After living for so long, working to bring back his leader, it was the only way he was going to let this end. But then, when Hitler woke up, it was an experience. He was absolutely insane, which is par for the course. A wonderful acting job there, very over-the-top and spot-on.
And, of course, we got Dean’s fantastic contribution to the final ending of Hitler. The case gave him something to focus on, pushing aside his still-evolving acceptance of Mary’s decision. And we got a shout-out to the grenade launcher that is still sitting unused in the trunk of the Impala. Soon, Dean, soon. Hey, even if he didn’t get to use the tempting weapon yet, he did get to kill Hitler. That earns him bragging rights for the rest of his life, even if Sam’s the only one who knows the truth. Dean is sure to pull out that reminder frequently, to the annoyance of his brother, to get his way.
Overall, I’m happy that we’re getting more of the monster-of-the-week type episodes this season, as we scale back from universal apocalypse scenarios. Dealing with Mary’s resurrection, the typical hunter cases, and the London Men of Letters is enough on their plate. Lucifer’s still out there, lingering, but he doesn’t feel like the huge threat that he did in the past. I’m sure that will change soon, but for now the Winchesters are on the road, saving people, hunting things, killing Hitler.
