Well, the title says it all really. This comic is about embedded journalists in Norman Osborn’s war on Asgard. The interest level on this one can go either way, but for a first issue this is definitely heavy on the “not interesting” side of the scale.
Osborn is going around collecting a bunch of journalists who will pretty much kiss his crazy rear instead of looking for/reporting on the “truth” of the war he’s started with Asgard and its otherworldly inhabitants. Lucky for the other side of the argument, there are two reporters (Ben Urich and Will Stern) that have fallen on hard times who get the opportunity to “embed” themselves with Volstagg as he makes his way back to Asgard. Hijinks are sure to ensue.
I feel like this is an easy out or an excuse, but since this is only the first issue in this miniseries I wasn’t expecting it to be mind blowing or anything. Plus, it’s about embedded journalists in a super powers vs. Nordic gods/goddess war. Not exactly the stuff that causes you to make button holes in your seat. I haven’t been keeping up on the MU, so when I started reading up to get ready for the whole Siege event I was super surprised that the people of the MU seemed relatively okay with Norman Osborn running the supes. I mean, I don’t really know what he did to gain the people’s trust, but damn near his entire past is full of evil craziness and he could have turned lead into gold and I still wouldn’t trust him to run a Dunkin’ Donuts.
So it’s nice to see that there are at least two others working in the idiot box that feel the same way and want to expose him for the villain he still is. I have a problem with two things, though:
- The whole “One side is wrong, one side is right” when it comes to journalism is irritating. If you’re biased it will show in your work, and how do you expect to be seen as someone who reports “the facts” of what is actually happening?
- What could possibly happen in this miniseries that won’t be covered in the main Siege title? Issue one of Siege isn’t hiding the fact that Osborn started this whole thing and set Volstagg up, so how is there a story for an entire mini?
