Captain America To Be World War II Period Film

The fine folks at CHUD spoke with Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, this week, and he dropped a few interesting tidbits about the plethora of upcoming comics-to-film adaptations that are happening. Among the notable hints and facts are:

  • The Captain America movie will be set during World War II and will be called The First Avenger: Captain America.
  • Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, and the Hulk are confirmed as “core members” of The Avengers.
  • A director for the Thor film will be announced by the end of the summer.
  • Feige strongly hints that the Mandarin will indeed be the main villain for Iron Man 2.

It sounds like Marvel is committed to making a cohesive superhero movie universe, which is exactly how they should be approaching these films. The two Iron Man movies, The Incredible Hulk, the Cap film, and Thor all will be leading up to the release of The Avengers. If the hype and excitement around the first Iron Man is any indication of what’s to come, we can expect huge things for Marvel in the next few years.

Iron Man Has Cap’s Shield… Wha?!

The astute folks at FirstShowing.net have made a pretty astounding discovery about the Iron Man movie. It seems that about an hour and a half into the film, when Tony is in his lab, you can see a very recognizable Marvel artifact in the background… Captain America’s shield! With the recent announcements of a number of new Marvel movies, including both Captain America and The Avengers, it’s a fair bet that Tony Stark will be running into Steve Rogers on the big screen. So how does one explain that shield lying around the Stark labs before Tony even knows Cap?

Robert Downey, Jr., Talks About Avengers Movie

After his appearance on The Tonight Show, Robert Downey, Jr, spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the possibility of his appearing in the recently announced Avengers movie. It seems a no-brainer that Downey will reprise his role as Iron Man in the film, but he’s remaining tight lipped about the role for now. When asked about the Avengers movie, his response is:

I really don’t know. What I’m on board for right now is the ride home. I don’t want to start talking out of my league, because that would have certainly been my inclination in the past. I kind of know how to keep my teeth together a little better than I used to.

The Avengers film is scheduled for a July 2011 release. This will follow the releases of at least four more Avengers tie-in movies in the interim–The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man 2.

Marvel Announces Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, and Avengers

With the huge success of last weekend’s Iron Man film, it comes as no surprise that Marvel has many more movie adaptations on the way. Marvel released their first quarter earnings for 2008 today, along with the announcements and even release dates for four new films:

Marvel today updated its feature film slate strategy and plans for the next three years, locking in key release windows for its character franchises. In order to focus its attention on maximizing the success of an Iron Man sequel and the launch of Thor in the summer of 2010 and because Marvel believes that the summer is the optimal time to launch a new property, the Company will not release a self produced film in 2009. Marvel plans to launch its 2010 film slate with the release of the sequel, Iron Man 2, on April 30, 2010, followed by the launch of Thor on June 4, 2010. Additionally, Marvel is planting its feature film stakes for summer 2011 with an Avengers-themed summer a two-picture project which will debut on May 6, 2011 with The First Avenger: Captain America (working title), followed by The Avengers in July 2011.

Iron Man 2 On The Fast Track

IESB was at the red carpet premiere for Iron Man yesterday, and it sounds like the cast and crew already are prepping for the sequel! According to IESB:

Downey’s trainer, Brad Bose, told the IESB that he starts training with Downey just after this final premiere in LA (Downey has had a few months off in between going to work on Ben Stiller’s TROPIC THUNDER). Then, he will have him ready to wear the suit again in just 5 months. This time around he wants to put an extra 10 pounds on the actor, for a little more bulk.

This would have Iron Man 2 beginning production in early 2009. No official word has come down about a sequel yet, but the studio probably is just waiting to see precisely how many piles of krugerands they rake in this weekend.
