Ticket To Ride: Nordic Countries Announced Worldwide

If you are a fan of the Ticket To Ride board game or just recently got hooked on the game via the new XBox Live Arcade version (as I did), you might be interested to hear that a new version of the game will be hitting shelves worldwide in September. Ticket To Ride: Nordic Countries is a new standalone game that follows the traditional Ticket To Ride rules and gameplay but features a new Scandinavian map with wintry landscapes and seasonal graphics. The English language edition of Nordic Countries will be a limited release, available only for a limited time, and it will cost around $50. For now, Nordic Countries is announced only as a traditional board game. There hasn’t been any announcement about whether Scandinavia will be added to the video game edition.

XBLA Review: Ticket To Ride

As I’ve mentioned in the past, it’s a rare thing these days for me to find a game on the XBLA that I’m willing to drop actual Microsoft points to buy. Ticket To Ride is one game that did manage to pry 800 points from my miserly hands, and it’s a fantastic buy.

Munchkin Board Game Announced

Wannabe dungeon raiders, listen up! Steve Jackson Games has announced that their popular Munchkin card game is making the leap into the board gaming realm. The board game incarnation, Munchkin Quest, was originally intended for release at this year’s Origins gaming convention, but the ship date has been pushed back while the designers tinker with last minute adjustments to the play. When the game finally does hit shelves, it’ll be available for $49.95. Here’s the official blurb from the publisher:

Kill the monster, grab the treasure, stab your buddy. That’s what it’s all about. Now, Munchkin comes to the boardgame.

Cooperate with the whole group, adventure with a partner, or strike out on your own. You don’t know what’s behind a door until you open it . . . then another tile is added to the dungeon. Battle monsters for power and treasure, or send them after your friends. Reach Level 10, and then get out alive if you can!

Designed by Steve Jackson, and illustrated by John Kovalic, this boardgame doesn’t take itself seriously. Except for the loot - munchkins are always serious about that!

Coming soon to game rooms everywhere . . .

Munchkin Quest, like its card game predecessor, will be an expandable game, and the first expansion pack is planned to release before the end of the year.

Settlers of Catan Gets Simplified

Catan

Mayfair Games has announced that they will be releasing a new version of the Settlers of Catan board game in September. This new edition will simplify the overall game to make it more appealing to new players.

Some of the planned changes include reducing the number of different game tiles from 19 to 6, decreasing the size of the resource cards, and including plastic playing pieces instead of the traditional wooden ones. Likewise, the marketing for the new version will be towards more of a mass-market. The packaging will not have the regular game’s “oil painting-esque” look, but will be more in line with other American board games on the market. This new version also will be available at mass market, including Toys R Us stores. The new Settlers will retail for $33, lower than the $42 price point of the classic game.
