The True Blood fandom may put me through a Meet the Sun ceremony (yes, I am that white, it could happen) for this recap, but this ep was two fists full of MEH for me. Underwhelmed, irritated, and confused is how it left me (despite some BWAHAHA-inducing moments). Not even the Barbara Walters camera filtered Viking sex dream sequence could raise this episode into awesome levels. It was close; a little less “Wow, it’s your boob again, Sookie” and a little more “Thank God for Sweden!!” might have helped.
We pick up were we left off at Godric’s house. Lorena and Bill are still outside and Bill tells her she may be immortal but she is dead to him. In a very ominous moment, she answers back with, “I wish you hadn’t said that,” then runs off into the night.
And guess what? Luke wasn’t kidding around and totally committed to blowing himself up! Bill runs into the aftermath looking for Sookie, because OMG, if she blows up, he can’t save her anymore!! He finds her under Eric (heads out of the gutters, people) as he shielded her from the blast. He weakly tells Bill to get the humans who were with Luke and he goes after them. He catches one, while the other speeds away in his minivan. For a minute, it looks like Bill’s gonna be a badass as he starts gnawing on the kid’s neck.
Back inside, Isabel’s crawling around the wounded, checking who’s dead and who’s not, while Godric’s just kind of standing there looking intensely disappointed and crushed. Eventually, Sookie shoves Eric off of her and starts to yell for Jason. He may be covered in gore, but he’s totally okay.
This is what I love about Eric. He totally hoses Sookie into sucking the silver out of his neck and chest. Literally, she sucks his wounds. This was like the vampire equivalent to “If not for me, do it for your country” or “Babe, it’ll never work again if you leave me like this!” lines. That man is so damn devious, and it tickled me so much, that I totally let out a mad scientist laugh during this scene. It was fantastic.
Bill “shows mercy” on that kid, and sends him off with a warning for FOTS about using children as suicide bombers. Jason finds all that’s left of Luke in the wreckage (his hand and Honesty Ring). Isabel confirms with Godric how many died (a handful of vamps, including Rhinestone Cowboy vamp, and two humans). After Bill makes his way back into what’s left of the house, he finds his girlfriend with a mouthful of Nordic manboob. At this point, I’m thinking he’ll just get fed up and walk away, but he stays to inform Sookie what a moron she is (only, he does it in a much nicer way because he luvs her). Godric sends the survivors back to the hotel for safety just in case FOTS come back.
Back at the hotel, Bill is taking emo to the next level. He says what happened with Eric was not her fault. Eric’s had many a year to hone his awesome levels of sex, and she’s just got too much goodness in her. I gagged there, just in case you all were wondering. He then has to inform her that she will start being sexually attracted to Eric. She all “THAT COULD NEVER HAPPEN IN A MILLION YEARS!!” Whatever, sister. You ain’t fooling anyone with that line of BS, least of all Bill.
Hoyt and Jessica are still hanging out in Bill’s living room, discussing “options” to their situation. She thinks there has to be some kind of surgery she can have, and he says they could just not have sex. Also, it’s called a “hymen,” nerds. If you’re going to be grown up enough to rub your fun parts together, you should at least use your Adult Words. Before she heads to the hole in the floor for the morning, Hoyt tells her that he wants her to meet his mother. Despite him basically saying his mom’s a Mega Beeyotch, she’s very excited that he wants her to meet the people in his life. You don’t have to fall in love with your first time, you know that, right? This just seems like the biggest whirlwind romance to me, but what do I know about matters of the heart?
Morning finally decides to roll in, and Tara and Eggs wake up looking like run over dog crap. Maryann thinks this all is just the greatest thing since indoor plumbing, but they aren’t feeling so great about what’s been happening. Tara, especially, doesn’t like blacking out because of what her mother was like when she was growing up. Once again, I’m thinking Tara is finally going to kick Maryann out of Sookie’s house and start using her brain. This hope was strengthened by Maryann officially losing it in the most pathetic and desperate way ever. She goes on and on about how civilization is BS, and people need to be out of control to be closer to the gods, and it’s just a whole lot of sad craziness. Then she offers them Bloody Marys because a Bloody Mary is totally a meal onto itself.
My question: Where the funk is Karl this whole time? We haven’t seen him since the Orgy in the Woods.
Sam’s still in jail, along with about half of the population of Bon Temps. Being out in public without your pants may not be illegal, but it should be.
Sookie can’t sleep and neither can Jason, so they have a little sibling bonding time. There’s something seriously wrong with me because this is supposed to be a very touching moment between brother and sister realizing they’re all each other has (and it was, don’t get me wrong), but am I the only one who was waiting for a Flowers in the Attic reenactment here?
Jason tells Sookie that everyone in Bon Temps liked him for what he was good at (football, sex), but they never liked him for him and the Newlins pretended like they did. Sook asks if he ever thought about what Gran would have thought about him getting involved with a bunch of hate-loving crazies, and he tells her he doesn’t want to talk about Gran because he doesn’t want to feel that pain it brings up in him. He gets really choked up when he realizes their whole family is dead after she tells him the have to keep Gran in their thoughts, and they have to go through that pain because they love her. That’s what you do. They also decide they have to grow up and start looking out for each other, and Sookie tells him he’s not dumb, just lazy, and I couldn’t agree with her more (or ever again) than I do with her now.
Sharing time is exhausting! They turn the TV on and guess who’s on it! The Newlins are having a televised argument with Nan “I’m the face of the vampire nation” Flanagan about the suicide bombing at Godric’s. I guess Texas doesn’t arrest organizations that talk kids into blowing themselves up for “the cause”? It was funny to watch the Newlins fight with each other more than Nan, but why wouldn’t they be arrested for what they did?
Arlene is trying to cover the tables at Merlotte’s on her own, what with Sookie being “special” in Texas, Daphne being dead and without a heart, Sam being locked up, and Tara drinking the Kool-Aid. She is drowning. Not to mention the freak out factor she’s dealing with concerning all the deaths. Lafayette tells her he’ll look out for her if she’ll look out for him, and she asks “When’s it gonna stop?” Probably when you all stop fueling Maryann and get rid of her, but I’m just spitballing here. Arlene and War Vet Terry finally talk to each other without the black eyes, too. Turns out, he’s not mad at her for having sex with him, he just can’t remember having sex with her and wasn’t sure they had even had sex (it’s been a long time for Terry, apparently). They’re still adorkable and I hope they stay together sans Maryann.
Tara and Eggs finally waltz into the bar, and they so wish they hadn’t the minute Lafayette lays eyes on Tara. He completely loses his crap at the sight of her face covered in bruises, and rightly assumes Eggs was the one who did it. I was really hoping for another beat down, Lafayette style (I love him so much), but Tara keeps them from throwing down on each other. She defends Eggs, even after he hits her in the mug when he’s going for Lafayette. They leave and the entire bar is drooling with the anticipation of a fight since they’re from a small town and they’re all under Maryann’s spell.
Hoyt’s momma is a hateful crazy who should probably join up with FOTS, and he’s pretty much had it with her and calls her on her hate for everything. He even lists all the people and things she hates. She says it’s not her fault, it was the way she was raised and we all yell unintelligibly at our TV screens. He flat out tells her she is going to meet Jessica and she better behave herself or he’s out the door because he’s “not a baby! [He’s] a grown-assed man!”
Oh, the moment we’ve all been waiting for! A tip of the hat to Sweden and to Ma and Pa Skarsgård for having the best genetic stuffs on the planet! Those two were obviously the models for Scott Summers and Jean Grey (that one’s for the comic book nerds). Far be it from me to have a picspam of devastatingly, criminally, smoldering hot manflesh in my serious recap of this television show because I’m way more interested in what Eric’s feeling and thinking and hoping he’ll share that with Sookie.
*ahem* Seriously, though, this was the most female sex fantasy ever. We get to see that she’s pretty much greedy and wants both Bill and Eric, and I’m thinking this is the 21st freaking century honey! She should just talk them into a 3-way and BOOM! Problem solved and no more guilt about having naughty dreams of your boyfriend’s archnemesis while you’re asleep next to said boyfriend.
Here’s the weird part (other than why everything was so pastel-y and soft): Lorena was sitting in a chair at the other end of the room taunting Sookie about how she’s already abandoned Bill for Eric. Was it really Lorena or was Sookie’s conscience taking that form instead of Jiminy Cricket?
Maryann shows up at the jail because she likes to go where everybody knows her name. And she wants to nab Sam. She catches the Sheriff at a weakened moment and black-eyes him within seconds. She takes the cell keys and heads back looking for Sam, but he’s shifted into a fly and buzzed out of there. She lets everyone out instead because she’s super angry now, and you wouldn’t like her when she’s angry. Because it’s annoying and bitchy.
Hoyt’s mom is a serious piece of work. Jessica tries her best to get along with her and make nice, but it doesn’t work because Momma isn’t even attempting to be nice. Jessica finally fangs out and says she can give Hoyt everything a human could. His mom says she can’t give him babies. BURN. I wouldn’t have even gone there, and I’ve been known to pull out all the stops to win an argument. Wow. I guess she hates human women who can’t get pregnant just like she hates Catholic priests and people who aren’t Caucasian.
Lafayette and Mrs. Thornton show up at Sookie’s house to get Tara away from Eggs and Maryann. Best intentions, and it totally needs to be done, but bringing Tara’s mom probably wasn’t the best idea Lafayette’s had. Tara’s eyes go black and she tries to strangle her mother. Eggs tries to beat the crap out of Lafayette and that totally backfires on him epically. They grab up Tara and haul ass out of there. The whole time, Sam, as a fly, was watching.
Okay. Tara. What is going on with you? Your mom is a drunk and you have problems with drinking and blacking out because you don’t want to be like your mom. Guess what, chica? You’re just like your mom at this point. I’m so irritated with what’s happening with this character.
Vampire politics make less sense to me than human politics. Nan shows up to bring the hammer down on everyone, including Godric. Yeah, I know, I’m confused about that too, but let’s keep going. Godric confesses that he gave himself to FOTS willingly because he wants to die (that’s TWO theories that were right). He removes himself from all positions of power and has Isabel replace him as Sheriff in Dallas. Eric must have been thinking the same thing I was (why is the oldest vampire on Earth taking it from this media whore) and has a massive urge to redecorate the hotel room with Nan’s insides. The brother brought up an interesting point here. Why don’t they use Jason as the example of what a cult FOST is? Use him to show how FOTS are trying to brainwash people so they can build an army?
I’m also left wondering why the hell Bill and Sookie are a part of this meeting and why Sookie’s wearing a tablecloth. Not to mention, she’s giving Eric the Sex Eyes the whole time the meeting’s going on. That’s real appropriate for what’s being discussed. You know, she reminds me of Renee Zellweger’s character in Appaloosa — she needs to be with the stallion in the herd, whoever that may be at the time.
Maryann shows up at Merlotte’s looking for Sam… still. She blacks out everyone’s eyes and demands that they find Sam and give him to her. Seriously, this character is so over for me.
Sam has one known ally, and that’s who he goes to. I love that Andy lets him in the motel room without commenting on Sam’s lack of clothing.
Godric apologizes for all the damage he caused by going to FOTS, and Nan thinks he’s taking everything too hard because she’s dumb and hasn’t figured out what everyone else in the room (and watching on TV) has figured out. He is going to kill himself. Eric is upset by this and tries to talk him out of it, but it doesn’t work. So Bill thinks this is the perfect time to have a bitchslapping contest with Eric’s face. He and Sookie belong together because they both have the worse sense of timing. He hits Eric in the face and it doesn’t faze him a bit, so Bill continues to be a royal squish mitten and just lets him walk away.
Sookie decides that she has to be there for Godric because she’s so “special” and everyone needs her around. Bill says she’s so “tender-hearted” and lets her go. I get it. She’s supposed to be the heart, the one who’s so loving and caring, but there has to be a way for her to serve this purpose and not be the biggest Mary Sue in all of history. I’m supposed to like her for these qualities, right? It’s just not working for me.
Before I talk about the last few minutes of this show, I have to say this: Alexander Skarsgård and Allan Hyde have the best chemistry any two actors on this show have had. Any two actors I’ve seen in anything in a long time, to be honest. The reversal of roles, with the older playing the younger and vice versa, was brilliantly done and in the hands of lesser actors would have been a train wreck. They played this out fearlessly.
But I hate watching men cry. And Eric cried. And I so didn’t, like the rest of the fandom seems to have done.
He begged Godric not to go through with this, said he would force Godric to stay alive, but in the end he bent to Godric’s will and left him to meet the sun. Sookie tells Eric she’ll stay with Godric until the end and she does. In the True Bloodverse, the older a vampire gets the easier it is for the sun to burn them (which is the opposite for just about every other vampireverse out there).
I hated this ending. I was really enjoying the dynamic of having Godric around Eric and hoped he’d stick around a little bit longer. I mean, look how long they’ve dragged out the Maryann storyline!
With only three episodes left in the season, how will our heroes save their town from the increasingly off-her-rocker Maryann, and get everyone back to normal?
Oh good, I’m glad I wasn’t the only one half-expecting Jason & Sookie to kiss or something.
I just realized that Jason really really really reminds me of Dubya. OMG scary.
I love how Eric is all tall and manly looking but then whenever there’s a shot of just him smiling he looks like a mischievous little kid.
I actually liked the episode a lot, but I agree about being annoyed with the direction of Tara’s character. I’m really hoping she’s going to see the light soon and she’ll be the one to do away with Maryann. Either her or Sam.
Oops! I completely didn’t even think about the NSFW aspect! I can fix that, if you guys want, or just have a link to it so you don’t have to keep the NSFW warning up?
DEAD ON with that mischievous little kid smile! He does that and I’m convinced he’s got something devious planned and that it’s going to be awesome. :)
No, that’s OK, I think the NSFW warning is sufficient. As long as there isn’t anything actually showing in the caps, which there isn’t really in these (well, kind of in the bottom left, but nothing everyone hasn’t already seen, heh).
Unrelated, I just looked up Allan Hyde and haha, he’s Ron Weasley in the Danish dubs of HP!
Fantastic!!! You made me laugh like a mad scientist during this review lol.
“a little less “Wow, it’s your boob again, Sookie” and a little more “Thank God for Sweden!!” might have helped.”
– LOL I know whatcha mean, I was thinking the same thing about Sookie showing off her Ta Ta’s again, I guess that’s for the male viewers and as for the female views; My eyes were glued on the Viking 0_0 (Hmm couldn’t they move the camera down more and a little to the left….and you know what if we got to see Bill’s butt why can’t we see Eric’s? God dammit I wanted to see Eric’s butt) :-(
I was hoping and waiting for the ‘bullet sucking scene’ and I have to admit I’m a little disappointed I so wanted Eric to kiss Sookie’s bloody lips. I know, I know I tell myself a million times not to compare the book vs show but I just couldn’t help it.
OMG your not the only one I so got that vibe from Jason/Sookie’s little chat.
Lafayette laying the smack down on Eggs and kidnapping Tara was awesome!
Bill really did pick the wrong time in marking his territory.
And your right Alexander Skarsgård and Allan Hyde where great. Awesome acting performances they just sold it.
Lets hope the ‘Maryann’ angle moves forward this Sunday bc she’s totally worning out her welcome.
Again love your recap!
Godric: “I’m gonna be sparkly, just like Edward Cul-OHGODITBURNS!”
Every so often with this show (and most shows) I start to wonder when it’s gonna pull a Heroes.
On Heroes lately (watch out, I’m gettin’ my NERD on) they start promising story lines (taking away powers, capturing and isolating the Heroes, etc.) and two episodes later POOF powers are back, but just a bit different. This whole Godric thing basically turned into the equivalent of saving Baby Matt Parkman. Baby Matt Parkman was saved (I guess) only to drop out of the story line (big deal), and Godric was saved only to look pensive then flameout. And he didn’t burn in a long torturous death scene like Bill’s from last season which would have given the scene some depth. Instead it was POOF (that word again) and he disappears in some Harry Potter/Tinterbell glittery CGI nonsense.
So much more could have been done with the Godric once they saved him. Godric and Eric could have gone on a spree gangbanging Catholic schoolgirls and/or settled in Ben Temps where they buy an old Victorian mansion to turn into a bed and breakfast and adopt a Vietnamese baby or two. Instead the only major plot point out of this is Sookie sucking up some bodily fluids (don’t they teach sex ed in Ben Temps?) so Eric knows wherever she goes.
As for the whole Sam/Maryanne thing. I vote that he transforms himself into an elephant and stomps her ass. But then she would do that do that shaky thing and POOF (once again) we’re back to where we started.
A few more things:
1. There should have been, at the least, an inappropriate cuddle between Sookie and Jason.
2. When Jessica and Hoyt discussed options, the one thing that came to mind is mouth lovin’ and sharp teeth DON’T go together.
3. The vamps dressed way better this episode and their hotel should be in Architectural Digest.
4. I hope Tara is the one to off Maryanne.
5. It’s great that Divine came back from the dead to play Hoyt’s mamma.
6. Officer Andy seemed like he was quite used to having naked men show up at his door.
7. Hiro and Ando should have left Baby Matt Parkman in the Nissan Cube (blatant product placement) and had a threeway with the Japanese/hick truck driver. Wait, wrong show. I think.
I tried watching this show, and by the end of the first episode I wanted to murder everyone involved in making this show exist. And then take an amnesia pill so I wouldn’t remember seeing it. So does it stop sucking(pun intended)?
I have to admit, I do like the Maryanne subplot. I hope they wrap it up in a cool way. Like Dexter did with the crazy rehab sponsor/bootie call/stalker/pyro chick in season 2 of Dexter. That actress would make a great vampire on this show.
y’all hate Maryanne, and I get it at this point…sort of. Though I must say, I have loved her all season, and knowing she’s one season character, I’ve enjoyed her thoroughly. That said, how did young Sam actually wind up in Maryanne’s boudoir to begin with? He was this fresh 17 year old shape shifter in a Meanad’s bed. How does that happen anyway? I think something has to be explained there, and I’ll bet it’s a juicy story. Hope so.
The Flowers in the Attic reference made me spit iced tea across my keyboard. Thanks for that laugh.
>>It’s great that Divine came back from the dead to play Hoyt’s mamma<<
Taffy Davenport: Oh, daddy! I knew you would! Mother’s been awful to me. For years, I’ve suffered. Please let me stay with you. I won’t be any trouble. I’ll help you clean and we can go out together and maybe… maybe you can buy me some regular clothes.
Thanks again, everyone!
Jason: 100 Internet points for best caption. I LOL’d here at work.
Wayne: I was trying to be nice, but I really did think Godric’s death was horrible. In timing, in execution, in CGI (they DID do a much better job when Bill was BBQ-ing himself). I liked the character a lot, but he wasn’t there long enough for me to feel like his death was a kick in the gut (like I think it was supposed to). That, and I hate man-crying. Seriously not even joking about that; it’s usually enough to make me get up and leave in disgust and never come back. Plus, a 2000+ yr. old vamp would have been handy in dealing with Maryann. I *hope* they wrap up her plot in a good way, or the season finale was wasted on her when it could have been used for Godric.
Ginny: No, there’s plenty of suck still in it. I’ll be honest, S1 was not good for me. I hated it for the first half, stopped watching after 3 eps, and came back in for the last 3 or 4 eps. S2 has been MUCH better, for me. There needs to be some action, some drama (and not all soap opera drama), so S1 was very slow until the serial killer aspect really kicked in. S2 has had loads of subplots going on, so there’s been lots to watch, lots going on. Still, for me, it’s not Aces all the time and the soap aspect starts to wear on me. Good thing they’re only 12-episode seasons!
Adam: I LOVED her when she first showed up, but I’d say mostly by episode 7-8 I kind of started to lose that love. The more I think about it, it might have to do with the fact that it seems like they’re going to have to find a crazy powerful supernatural to take her down. I’ve not read the books, so I’m not sure where they’re going to find one, what *kinds* of supernaturals they have in the TBverse, that kind of thing.
I’m also confused about who falls under her control and who doesn’t. I understood why Mrs. Divine Fortenberry and the Sheriff weren’t already (they hadn’t been partying with her and what not), but why hasn’t Officer Man Andy gone black-eyed yet?
Wayne – I’m a fan of Dexter too! I can’t wait for it to come back. I loved that crazy rehab sponsor/bootie call/stalker/pyro chick, I thought she was awesome Bwahahahaha hell yea she would definitely be a perfect vamp for this show!
Summer – I was thinking the same thing, why isn’t Maryann’s influence affecting Officer Man Andy? Interesting….
Summer, just curious: does it bother you when girls cry? Or just guys?
I liked S1, but it took a few eps into it for me to really understand what the point of the show was. S2 has been miles better IMO, right from the start.
The thing about Godric is, even though his death seems pointless and we don’t feel much emotional impact from it, there will still be some major repercussions for Eric’s character, motivations, outlook on life, etc. So it’s not like it won’t have an effect on the plot, like the stuff on Heroes.
Celeste: Oh my goodness, I’m going to have to reveal my deep, dark secret here: I’m really the original Ice Queen. I know it’s horrible, but it’s when anyone cries. Young, old, babies, men, women, trannies, everyone. I just get all frosty and curmudgeon-y. I’ve told 5-year olds to suck it up and stop (she’s related to me, so it’s OK, the emotional damage is contained).
I didn’t even think about it, but you’re absolutely right about the impact Godric’s death will have on Eric. I’m trying to decide if I’m going to like the “new” Eric (if Sookie’s dream is any indication) or not. I like the devious, shady, steeled character he’s been. Of course, another dimension to the character is *always* appreciated since the one dimensionality some characters have gets boring, and we would never want Eric to be boring.
I don’t think Eric’s going to do a 180 or anything. But he already has acted almost completely different when he’s been around Godric, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see some changes in him. He could actually get MORE steely from it. Defense mechanisms and all that. Either way, he’s still more interesting than Bill!
And, well, I actually would prefer you feel that way about anyone crying to you only having the reaction to men crying. =)
1st – Andy has been affected by the black eyes. The first time he went to MaryAnn’s party & saw the pig (Daphne) there, after he wanders around for a bit, you do see him black-eyed & drinking.
2nd – I wondered where the hell Karl was too! I love this book series, I’m so fed up with the 2nd rate producers on this show. They’re so inconsistent & they totally, consistently, F’up the story in trying to change it from the book. The MaryAnn storyline is a perfect example. It served a purpose & was clear & concise in the book… She didn’t drag out the story line b/c she wasn’t looking for drama & ratings. They wrapped it up in a logical way. But that can’t happen with the show as it’s already gone on WAY too damn long & we’re all sick of her as of like 3 episodes ago… AND the way she disappeared in the book can’t happen now. The whole MaryAnn/Sam dynamic was totally totally different.
3rd – I actually LOVED what they did on the show w/the Godric storyline (with the exception of making Godric Eric’s maker, which he’s not in the books). In the books, you don’t really like Godric & you’re not meant to… You might feel a bit of sympathy for him, but he’s not the same character, really, other than being 2K yrs old & wanting to burn. I agree the blue flame CG was a bit hokey but it was meant to look like something beautiful vs something tragic like Bill’s burning… I think that’s why they went that route. The dynamic between Eric & Godric & the scene at the end was amazing & I absolutely loved it. IN PART, because while Alan Ball made some changes to this storyline, he actually kept the duration of Godric’s existence similar to the book. Godric wasn’t meant to stick around and have playdates with Eric back in Shreveport or Bon Temps. Doing so would have cheapened the character & his dramatic storyline. For once, Ball didn’t drag out something good & turn it into something we ultimately loathe. If only he’d do the same for the rest of the series.
4th – Even tho Jessica isn’t in the books b/c the whole Longshadow scene goes down differently there, I’m ok with her addition now. She was a pain in the arse when she was first introduced, but killing the drama & just making her ‘real’ made her a lot easier to deal with. And thanks to her addition, Hoyt gets some much needed affection, which the poor guy never seems to get otherwise. I’m really loving both of these characters right now. Sadly, I don’t think they’re gonna last.
Regarding Maryann’s end, I believe the final or final 2 episodes will introduce a new, very powerful vamp who will be the one to send her packing in some form or another. As I said before this is totally different from the books so I really don’t know for sure. In the books, Vampires can’t do anything about maenads, so how a vamp is gonna ‘get rid’ of her is beyond me.
Jason — I loved your comment. Too funny. :P “IT BURNS!!”
Guys, if you haven’t read the books yet, seriously, do so. They’re short & SO worth it. You’ll have a greater appreciation for the ‘true’ TrueBlood. I really enjoyed all of the books except book 5, as it felt kinda predictable to me.
p.s. So happy to see the steamy Eric w/Sookie scenes… Can’t wait for that story line to progress, hopefully next season. If they follow the books, we’ll get to see SOOO much more of “him” (hehe) and them together. Almost everyone I know who has read the books is “TEAM ERIC”.
I so feel you on the Sookie/Bill annoyances. I was so fed up with them I almost quit watching around episode 5. But I had read we would get to see Alex in the nude this season, so I persevered. It got better, so I’m glad I hung in there. But I’m a fan of the books and I feel like they are completely butchering the characters I love. Sookie’s not funny. Bill’s a simpering, whining, angst-filled loser. I’m not a fan of his in the books either, but at least I can respect the character. In the show he is completely useless. I keep watching only because I love Alexander Skarsgard with unreasonable passion, considering he’s a stranger I’ll never meet. I suppose I’ll keep watching as long as he’s around, no matter how much everyone else on the show sucks.
Celeste: Yep, I’m pretty much frigid with everyone! LOL I’m like an 80-year old crusty lady who lives alone on the corner house and never takes care of her lawn, yelling at kids to stay off it, stuck in a 29-year old’s body. It’s a scientific oddity. :)
Dawnie: Dude, you’re right about Andy – he DID go black-eyes at that party! But why isn’t it sticking? I was wondering if Dionysus(sp?) wouldn’t just show up and reign her in somehow (or if KARL was the god himself). She forcing these people to be out of control, it seems to me, not letting them be out of control of their own free will like she keeps saying she’s into. I had heard about a Vampire Queen and assumed she’d be the one to handle Maryann after Godric torched himself. But, like I say in my recaps, I throw out theories all the time and they’re usually wrong. I keep hearing good things about the books, but I kind of don’t want to read them if I’m going to continue to watch the show since I also keep hearing Show isn’t following the books very much.
Thevikingsgirl: Well, ASkars isn’t a bad reason to watch anything, if you ask me. ;)
OMG Summer, thank you so very much for this review and for being as fed up with Suckie as I am. Last episodes THREE motivational speeches (Jason, Bill, Godric) brought me to the verge of depression. I thought it so sad that poor Godric after 2000 years had to go to his death with this and the freely flowing fake tears … thank god he was depressed and removed enough not to mind as much as I did. I don’t know if it’s bad scripting or really terrible acting or an unfortunate combination of the two but it has come to a point where, to speak with Rev. Newlin, I really ceased to understand what these people see in her.
Which brings me to my second huge disappointment and in this I am in total disagreement with you. I thought the “sex” scene with Eric, long did we see it coming and long did we lust for it, was the lamest crap I’ve seen in years. I mean come on, this is ERIC we’re talking about, bad-ass, cunning, dangerous and HOT Eric, not some 12-year-old Twilight-fan’s-dream-come-true. Is this really what we women fantasize about? Is this how we picture “sex with Eric”? I’m not unreasonable, I would have put up with all the sweet talking, the gentle caressing, the long glances and the pastell colours, if, IF he had shown so much as the shadow of a fang. I know if was Sookie’s dream, but even Sookie had more interesting sex with Bill last season, why would she want water that down with Eric of all people? I’m glad that everyone seems to have high hopes for Eric’s character development. He’s probably the most layered and interesting (and sexy of course) at the moment, but if this episodes “love scene” was any indication I’m very afraid that next season’s Eric will be this season’s Bill: a vanilla coloured shadow of himself. It seems to be the price to pay for Suckie’s affections.
Eric should be with Godric; I agree with you that the chemistry was unbelievable, as was the acting, just superb (and no, I didn’t mind the crying, the more crying the better!) It was such a treat and I think they could have drawn this storyline a few episodes longer and cut Maryann short instead. Everyone seems to be fed up with her and that’s a shame because the character and the acting are compelling, it just has become way to repetitive. Tara? I want her to die, that’s all I have to say about that. Bill? Don’t even get me started. He _is_ taking emo to another level, self absorbed, melodramatic and completely pussified by Eric.
Having said all this, I still love the show. I’m only tough-loving it because it has so much potential. The books however are another matter. I _tried_ to read them and I have a high tolerance for bad writing, I read all of Twilight for crying out loud but I have to say Stephenie Meyer shines right up there with the Brontes compared to this. It’s unbelievably bad and I have to give all kudos to Alan Ball for biting his way through it and rescuing the storyline.
