The Topps Company is best known for filling millions of shoeboxes with baseball cards throughout the formative years of many kids. They’re not all about the baseball, though, as they purchased WizKids in 2003. WizKids is the gaming company founded by Jordan Weisman in 2000 that brought collectible miniature gaming to the forefront of the hobby with releases such as Mage Knight, HeroClix, and HorrorClix. Topps announced this week, though, that today’s economic environment doesn’t support the kind of market WizKids targets, so WizKids is no more. This doesn’t mean that all of WizKids’ lines are getting the kibosh, though. Topps CEO Scott Silverstein noted that the company is working on “strategic alternatives so that viable brands and properties, including HeroClix, can continue without any noticeable disruption.”
