Screen tests were held yesterday by Marvel Comics for an actor to play Steve Rogers, alter-ego of Captain America. The latest shortlist of contenders for the Joe Johnston-directed superhero movie are: John Krasinski, Michael Cassidy (Smallville), Patrick Flueger (The 4400 and Brothers), Scott Porter (Friday Night Lights), Mike Vogel (Cloverfield). Gossip Girl‘s Chace Crawford’s screentest is, as yet, unconfirmed. Jensen Ackles and Tron Legacy‘s Garrett Hedlund have been removed from the list due to scheduling conflicts, but Hedlund may be reinstated if that problem is solved.

Captain America is the story of a young guy who was rejected from enlisting in World War II by Uncle Sam, but who eventually becomes a member of the Avengers, Marvel’s superhero team.

Who do you think should be given the role?

About the Author
Maggie Van Ostrand is ashamed to not be a geek, but she’s proud to have once attended a Star Trek convention where Bill Shatner spoke to her. He said “Hi. Are you anybody?” Maggie graduated from college so long ago, she can’t remember the name of it but thinks it was somewhere in New York. She majored in stuff that has nothing to do with anything she does today, except the classes she audited at the AFI. She knows little or nothing about comic book characters unless they’re drawn by Robert Crumb. She knows nothing of gaming outside of Vegas, and still thinks Moonlight was way better than True Blood. She is here because she reminds the publisher of his grandmother and he felt sorry for her. Her favorites are anything by Billy Wilder, Godfather I and II, Lawrence of Arabia, & Young Frankenstein. She writes political satire for Huffington Post, was head writer for movie trivia TV show; writes a column about Old West characters; was TV comedy ghostwriter; humor columnist for newspapers and online publications, and other boring stuff. Hahah @ Maggie. Seriously though, Mark Valley.

As much as I’d love to wear wings on my head and hurl a shield around, I don’t think that’s going to be in my cards. I second Celeste’s Mark Valley nomination. Watch any episode of Human Target, and it’s easy to see why he’d be the perfect Captain America / Steve Rogers, post-supersoldier serum. Although Barrowman would be a lot of fun to see in pretty much anything.

All the guys I’ve heard about who are up for the part seem way too young / flimsy / un-rugged. I can see some of them as Bucky, Cap’s World War II sidekick, though.

I wonder if the fact that Human Target is DC has anything to do with the fact that he isn’t even being mentioned. Because seriously, I can’t see any other reason why he wouldn’t be.

And hey, they could always get Colin Ferguson to play him before he gets beefed up.. ;)

Seems like Mark Valley was/is the choice of the people, but one more time, TPTB aren’t listening. Or maybe his Human Target contract got in the way?
