As a result of the recent earthquake and after shocks in Haiti, thousands upon thousands have been left dead and untold numbers more are left injured, homeless, or lost in the rubble. While I will not claim to be an expert on Haiti, I know that they are one of the most impoverished countries in the Western Hemisphere and right now, more than ever, the people there need our help. With the death toll and damage so high, disease and exposure and unknowable other side effects are going to be shock waves through the people of that country for some time.

I don’t know of a geeky way to help. I only know that geeks and non-geeks alike can help. How much do you spend in a week or a month on geeky things, comics, movies, books? What if for this week or this month you said “Listen, geek spending budget, someone needs you more than me”? Every little bit can help supply doctors with the supplies they need or any number of other things. Many people will be asking to collect supplies, but right now the best thing to donate, if you can, is money so that the supplies most needed can be purchased and sent there.

I have come up with some charities (listed below) that you may be interested in if you were wondering how you could help the people of Haiti. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about these or other charities — I may not know the answers, but I will do all I can to help you find them. With that said, if you have the inclination and ability to help, here is how you can. Many, if not all, of these organizations already have people on the ground helping the people of Haiti, so your donations will help keep them supplied so they can continue their work.

  1. Yéle Haiti
  2. Help Haiti Now
  3. American Red Cross
  4. Doctors Without Borders
  5. Oxfam

On behalf of myself and my associates at Fandomania, we are hoping for the best for not only those on the ground in Haiti, but for those who have friends or family there. Our condolences to all who have lost loved ones in this tragedy.
