Fandomanual: Social (Love) Lives – Top 10 Places to Meet a Fellow Geek

No matter what kind of person you are, meeting people is hard. It’s just a daunting task that has to happen though, right? That’s why I thought I’d help you out (like this loner is an expert). So below are some of the best places for geeks to meet other likeminded geeks out there.

10. Renaissance Faires

People that go to these are a very special kind of nerd and if you like that time period and enjoy dressing like that, you have to find your other half while in a corset.

9. Concerts

Liking music and liking live music are two very different things. Not everyone likes the crowds, the high volume, and the waiting that comes with a night out at a show. So if you were able to meet someone awesome who happens to love the same band as much as you, what could be better?

8. Comedy Clubs

Comic nerds aren’t hard to find. They are people who know everything there is to know about standup, from the history to the right-this-second. You love to laugh and you love people that can take a joke. So places like the Laugh Factory in LA are your best bet to find someone who shares your appreciation for everything comedic.

7. Bookstores

It isn’t hard to figure out where bookworms should head to try and find a mate. I know Borders went under now that the Nooks are slowly creeping in, but there are still traditional book stores out there. So get your nose out of those pages and befriend a real life character.

6. Arcades

They aren’t just for kids, oh no. Kids today are into staying home and sticking to the confines of their own console. This leaves 20-somethings and above to have the arcades all to their selves (hopefully). If you see someone you want to get to know, challenge them to a game and make sure to offer to pay for the first round. That trick doesn’t just have to work in the bars.

5. Midnight Movies

Anyone can go to a movie during the day or at a decent hour after dark, but those cinephiles are the ones who have to go at midnight. They have to be the first person (along with a ton of others) to see the new release. If you happen to want to date someone who shares that intense passion for film, just remember that your future husband or wife could be in line that night.

4. Comic Book Shops

Well, duh. Comics and nerds go hand in hand like Bugs Bunny and Michael Jordan. Imagine dating someone who not only loves to read comics, but enjoys getting them graded too!

3. Online

It’s 2014, people. Going out isn’t for everyone since we’ve become a little too comfortable sitting behind a screen. For those who use their laptop at a crutch, make an online profile and ease into the dating world that way. You don’t even have to do the traditional sites — like I said at the start of this month, there are a ton of geek-centric ones out there. (Kip was necessary.)

2. GameStop @ Midnight

Say the arcade was overrun with youths; at least you know there are going to be some grown-ups at the midnight release of the hot new game. Then after chatting it up, you could have the other over for dinner and a night of endless gaming.

1. Conventions

This is the obvious one. This is the place where all of the above can be found. Even those online shy guys and gals burrow out if the con’s good enough, right? So always be on the lookout at conventions because they are the best place to hook up with another geek.

This concludes the social (love) lives of geeks, nerds, dorks, dweebs and all the rest. Next month we’re going to dive into the world of fashion, from the mind of one of my oldest friends to a dude who used to work at one of my favorite tee sites. It’s going to be a good one!
