I made the Netflix find of the year when I checked out Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. The show is full of fun, over the top storylines, dazzling costumes, and amazing characters. The actors on the show impressed me with their flair and characterization. The leading lady is charming, intelligent, and possesses a bold spirit that I admire. I suggest it to anyone who loves a good old-fashioned mystery and a savvy lady detective.

Who is She?

The Hon. Phryne Fisher is the main character of Kerry Greenwood’s novel series and the Australian television show Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. She is played by the elegant Essie Davis on the show. Phryne returns to Australia after many years abroad for personal reasons (don’t want to spoil!) and decides being a detective is perfect for her. She lives for her passions and has the brains to make sure she always comes out on top. Phryne always get the mystery solved and steals a few hearts in the bargain.

Fun Fact:

Phryne has an array of interesting skills: she can burlesque dance, fly a plane, and nurse wounds with the best of them.

Why So Crushworthy?

Phryne is a wonderful force of nature. I think she epitomizes the Jazz Age spirit of the 1920s. She lives life to the fullest and never lets an experience pass her by. She is also brilliant and has learned many things in her travels. However, she isn’t arrogant about it. She just simply believes that women should be able to pursue whatever path they wish and not hide their intelligence. Phryne enjoys challenges so it makes sense she would decide to become a lady detective. If the path leads to making her sister’s killer pay for his crimes, so be it. Phryne’s headstrong spirit conquers everyone in her path.

Phryne is described as a “sexually liberated” character. Phryne does go beyond the norms of her time but she doesn’t need her sexuality to define her. She may break the traditional role and scandalize the neighborhood, but she never lets it slow her down. Phryne has a large heart to add to her repertoire. She takes in those who need help and never asks for anything in return. Phryne likes to party a bit but she’s always up for solving the crime. Her wit and talent are a match for D.I. Jack Robinson. Their witty repartee offers some of the best moments for the show. Phryne takes life by the horns and steers it her way each time. Here’s hoping for season four so I can see more of her adventures.
