I’ve gotten into podcasts recently. I call it an occupational diversion. I’ve discovered some awesome gems during the past few weeks. I also rediscovered my love for an old favorite. I was so out of the podcast world I was a bit overwhelmed at all the choices. There are so many podcasts out there! I listened to the good and bad before making this list.
Welcome to Night Vale
This is the podcast I started listening to again. The sonorous tones of Cecil Baldwin and the strange happenings in the town of Night Vale was something I got distracted from for a long while. However, after talking to a coworker, I realize that I missed it. I’ve been listening to it from the beginning and I enjoy hearing about the Faceless Old Woman and the romance of Carlos and Cecil. Check out this podcast if you want to enter the quirky and mysterious town in the desert.
LORE
Narrated by Aaron Mahnke, this podcast combines history, folklore, and supernatural happenings. All his stories are based on true events. I usually rush to Google the subjects he talks about. I’m still thinking about the Lobotomobile and the stories of witch trials and mental health asylums. As a history writer, I quickly got addicted to the series. I hear it’s being made into a television show. I would check it out!
Footnoting History
Did you know that women used to carry around weasel testicles because they thought it prevented pregnancy? Neither did I. This podcast talks about the tidbits of history they don’t teach in class. I like the variety of hosts and experts they have on the show. I like learning new things and this show helps you learn a new side of history. It’s a good way to get in the groove for my job.
The Dollop
A mixture of bro talk, comedy, and history makes up this podcast. Today I learned about a man who set up a cult of “holy rollers” in Washington State. Additionally, I’ve learned about Colonial dental care and services. I have a thing for those odd stories in history. However, it did take me a bit to warm up to it. The Bro talk grated on me at first, then I got used to it.
Nerdette
Finally, a geek-oriented podcast! This one is run by Tricia and Greta. The podcast covers a variety of nerdy topics from Game of Thrones to science. The topics and conversation are refreshing. I like how they are not limited to just television and video games. They talk about topics you wouldn’t imagine have a nerdy niche. I highly recommend them!
