Dark Horse To Publish Neon Genesis Evangelion Spinoff

This week Dark Horse Comics announced that they will be publishing a five volume manga series called Neon Genesis Evangelion: The Shinji Ikari Raising Project. This manga will be hitting shelves in the spring of 2009 and loosely follows the plot of the Gainax video game of the same name. It also appears to be connected to the alternate universe of NGE shown in episode 26 of the anime.

The series will remove the characters from the carnage and gloom of the traditional anime series and place them in a setting where Shinji and Asuka are good friends, and Rei Ayanami is Shinji’s love interest (as opposed to the uber creepy Angel dude from the anime).
