This time in the Fangirl Challenge, I’ll be talking about my Top 9 TV Shows. You might have heard of some of these and some you might not have. It was very hard to narrow it down to only nine.
9. The Professionals
The Professionals was a British show from the ’70s and ’80s. It was built up to be kind of like Starsky & Hutch, but soon had an identity of its own. At the time, some people thought the show was too violent and they even had one episode banned from being re-broadcast for quite some time.
8. Black Sails
Black Sails is a new pirate show on Starz. It mixes Treasure Island with real life pirates and it’s very exciting. It’s going to be very interesting to see John Silver, Billy Bones, and Captain Flint evolve into the characters we know from the novel. The show is very political, which some people find boring, but I think it’s interesting to see how real pirate life was.
7. The Musketeers
The Musketeers is also a new show, but from the BBC. It should air in America sometime in the Spring. It takes the classic tale of The Three Musketeers and puts its own spin on the tale. The show has just the right amount of humor, thrills, fights, and mystery to keep people interested.
6. Red Dwarf
Red Dwarf is another British show, this time a comedy. I first saw it on PBS and was instantly hooked, even though I didn’t quite get some of the jokes. Set in the far future, and then even farther future, Red Dwarf follows Lister, Rimmer, Cat and, later, Kryten as they try to make their way back to Earth. There are numerous mishaps that follow them and set them back, but it sure is fun watching them try.
5. The Almighty Johnsons
The Almighty Johnsons is a New Zealand based show about Norse Gods being reborn in the modern day. It’s funny, raunchy, and quite touching at times. It focuses on four brothers and the people they know as they try to deal with being Gods reborn. Some relish in it, while others would prefer their powers to go away.
4. Stargate: Atlantis
Stargate: Atlantis was a spinoff of Stargate: SG-1 and definitely was able to stand on its own. It was funny, but also could smack you in the face with feelings. Because it was set off world all the time, there was much more that the show could tackle. The show also introduced great characters, like Teyla and Ronon. It wasn’t a perfect show by any means, but it was fun.
3. Sports Night
Sports Night was by Aaron Sorkin a year before The West Wing. It follows many of his shows’ same proclivities: the walk and talk, quirky characters, fast paced humor, and seriousness when the time calls for it. It was only on for two seasons, which is a shame because it was just so good.
2. Spooks
Spooks, or MI-5, was a British show that followed the lives of a group of MI-5 officers. It was edgy, suspenseful, and no character was ever safe. Spooks killed off more characters than almost any show or writer. The show had twists and turns you never saw coming, even up until the last episode. There is a movie being made as a follow up to the show, which hopefully gets released in the US.
1. Gundam Wing
Gundam Wing was my first anime. Oh, I had watched Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball Z, but at the time, I didn’t think of those as anime. Gundam Wing hooked me from the first episode. It made me care about the characters, and in some cases despise them. The five man boys were always the best part to me and it was fun to watch them grow up and realize they didn’t have to be soldiers.
