It’s hard to believe that you have run out of things to read since March, but in the event that you have, I have found the new science fiction and fantasy “must reads” for April. The list was SO long in fact that I’ll be splitting it in two. Here’s the first round from the first half of the month.
- Chinese Opera by Ian Wedde came out April 1st. Little Frank, a 120-year-old gangster who traded his imagination for a secure and long life, is the protagonist in this dark and dazzling novel set in an all-too-plausible near future. As the leader of a notorious gang, Little Frank is trapped in a luxurious life of mindless routine when he is suddenly jolted awake in the year 2090 to the bizarre facts of his current existence. Little Frank must now race to rebuild his memory and make sense of his new reality in this rich and complex work of science fiction.
- Blue Diablo: A Corine Solomon Novel by Ann Aguirre came out April 7th. Corine Solomon is a handler—when she touches an object she instantly knows its history and its future. Using her ability, she can find the missing—which is why people never stop trying to find her. Like her ex-boyfriend Chance, who needs Corine’s gift to find someone dear to them both. But the search proves dangerous as it leads them into a strange world of demons and sorcerers, ghosts and witchcraft, zombies—and black magic…
- Every Demon Has His Day by Cara Lockwood came out April 7th. In her wildest dreams, Constance Plyd never thought she’d see dead people. Then again, she never thought she’d be hit on by her ex-husband at his own funeral…or be the prime suspect in his murder. Fortunately for Constance, irresistibly sexy sheriff Nathan Garrett wants to believe her explanation — that a card-carrying demon in a black suit killed Jimmy in the garage — or maybe he wants something more. Either way, all signs are leading to a showdown of hellish proportions, with Constance at the heart of the battle, when the Devil and would-be mother of the Antichrist (a pop princess wannabe) descends on Crockett County. Sure, she’d rather be cooking up a storm for the next state fair, but if she’s going to be the Chosen One, at least Constance can give a few demons a Texas-style butt kicking….
- WWW: Wake by Robert J. Sawyer released April 7th. Caitlin Decter is young, pretty, feisty, a genius at math—and blind. Still, she can surf the net with the best of them, following its complex paths clearly in her mind. But Caitlin’s brain long ago co-opted her primary visual cortex to help her navigate online. So when she receives an implant to restore her sight, instead of seeing reality, the landscape of the World Wide Web explodes into her consciousness, spreading out all around her in a riot of colors and shapes. While exploring this amazing realm, she discovers something—some other—lurking in the background. And it’s getting more and more intelligent with each passing day…
