For over a year I gave you my take on men and women in the geek sphere who make us go absolutely insane (in a good way). Along the way I’ve even tossed in shows and movies like The Walking Dead and Harry Potter. Now it’s time to say goodbye and move onto the next. “Fangirl Guides” are just taking a little break, but rest assured they’ll be back because every day there’s some new actor gaining an incredible fandom.
Leslie Simon wrote a book that basically taught us that geeking out doesn’t necessarily mean that person has to fit the stereotype that Hollywood’s painted for years. I feel the same way and that’s why I wanted to do something that was about the passion we all have for what makes us a geek. Are you a fashion geek? Do you sit around during Fashion Week and go gaga over new designers? What about those comic book freaks who can pick apart the plots and name every single thing that happened in issue #57 on page 24? Be it fashion or comic books, fandom is a force to be reckoned with because there’s an incredible amount of passion behind the person who dedicates their life to that sector of their life.
So that’s what the next year will be about for me and Fandomania. Each month will focus on a new topic and there’ll be the usual guide you’re familiar with if you read the “Fangirl’s Guides” (only tweaked a bit), an interview with an insider, my personal take on the matter, and then a top 10 list to cap each month off. Wait, the big difference here is that it’s not all about me this time around. Instead of trying to guess why some of you are so into, say, cosplay, I’m talking with 12 super fans along the way to get a better grasp on each month’s topic.
2014 has already been mapped out and I’m hoping not to get lost along the way as I explore 12 realms that garner their own unique fan love — from the usual video games to the world of collecting. You’ll have to tune in next week to see which fandom kicks things off.
