DC Direct’s newest collectible line is a three-part statue featuring some of the biggest names in the Justice League. Here’s my review of the first part, which includes Batman and Wonder Woman.
The Justice League Build A Scene Statue is based on the art of Ed Benes, showing the heroes running full-tilt and en masse. The statue series is comprised of three pieces, each of which will be released at intervals of a month or two apart and each of which includes two of the heroes. Additionally, each of the three parts released will come with a piece of the Red Tornado figure which, once assembled, can go in back of the main row of heroes. The bases of the statues will fit together to form one big piece that certainly will look impressive for any DC fan. The statue has some roster modifications from the original artwork; several of the heroes on the second row are left out of the statue, while the Flash is added into the statue.
This first piece, featuring Batman and Wonder Woman, measures around 8″ high, and it comes with the cyclone base for the Red Tornado, which measures about 7.5″ high. The cyclone looks impressive, with bits of the rocky base caught up in the whirlwind and swirling around it. Without the rest of Red Tornado to put together onto it, though, it looks kind of strange and out of place. Until the rest of the statues are released, I have my cyclone base sitting out of the way and not on display with the main piece.
Batman and Wonder Woman both look great here. Batman is shown in his grey and blue costume, and the sculpt and paints are dead-on. Similarly, Wonder Woman is well crafted and is my favorite representation of the character that I own. The character figures come attached to the base, and they are positioned very closely together, so you’ll want to be careful not to let them scrub against each other when you move the statue around. In the box, they come with a little removable piece of plastic stuck between Batman and Wonder Woman, which is a nice and protective touch.
The base is a grey and rocky ground with curved edges that look like they’ll conform well to the bases of the future releases. The upcoming statues will include a piece with Superman and Black Canary and a third with Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) and the Flash. Once all of these are out and assembled, it will be a true collectible spectacle. Even on its own, though, the Batman and Wonder Woman statue looks great and stands on its own as a very cool Justice League collectible.
