Top Gun Takes Flight on Steam

Top Gun has made its landing on Steam, and is now available for download on Microsoft Windows. Based on the iconic film by Tony Scott, it promises to bring gravity-defying action in the same vein as its silver-screen counterpart. Announced yesterday by Paramount Digital Entertainment, Top Gun is a free-flying combat simulator that expands on the lore of the film’s title characters, including Maverick, Iceman, and others. Written by the film’s original screenwriter, Jack Epps, Jr., the game looks to be an action-packed adventure that stays true to the spirit of its big-screen predecessor.

Players will assume the role of both Radio Intercept Officer Goose and Maverick, battling and taking to the skies with some of the best the Top Gun Academy has to offer. Once graduated, players will fly high above the Indian Ocean to engage in massive battles and dogfights against the Soviets.

Whilst earning ranks at the Academy and moving close towards active duty, players can band up with veteran pilots in an effort to shoot down enemy planes over the Indian Ocean in Campaign Mode. For fans of the film interested in a challenge, gamers will have the task of facing the Soviets’ top ace pilot, all the while controlling the already-rocky relationship between Iceman and Maverick.

Aside from flying solo in the game’s single-player mode, players can engage in five multiplayer styles with up to 11 other flyers. In Horde mode, gamers must overcome odds and demonstrate their flying skills as they conquer endless rounds of difficult enemies.

Whether enrolling in the US Navy or joining comrades in the Soviet army, players can participate online in a number of adrenaline-pumping head-to-head multiplayer modes. With a total of six wholly unique combat planes, including the US Navy’s F-14, the F-16, F/A-18, and the enemy’s MiG-29, MiG-31 and Su-27, gamers can literally spend hours unearthing each model’s nuances.

Developed by doublesix, the recent award-winner of Spike’s “Video Game Awards” for “Best Game Based on a Movie or TV Show,” Top Gun is available for download on Microsoft Windows through Steam for $9.99.

About the Author
Ryan Whiting lives on an island you've probably never been to and probably care little about. Bermuda, a 21-square mile land mass 700 miles off the coast of New York, is an unlikely place to find such a geeky writer. But he exists and types away, ranting about bad story-telling in video games or raving about last night's episode of 24. That is, if it was any good, of course. But contrary to what his website may say, Ryan's geekdom is not overly eclectic, and he keeps to his fandoms. He's not really into comic books or anime (save for a few exceptions) and, when it comes to that vampire craze, he'd have a hard time discerning even Jacob from Edward. So, he stays away from such areas and sticks to what he likes. Ryan's in love with serialized dramas, sci-fi shows, and video games, specifically RPGs and FPS's. He'd also like to consider himself a film critic, but only for the movies he doesn't walk out on. He won't do it again. He promises. Ryan's also a bit of a techy, and, whenever possible, tries to stay up-to-date on whatever's current or popular in the gadget-world. Yes, he has to have that latest thing, whatever it is. Outside of confining himself to either his favorite shows on DVD or the gadget blogs, Ryan has a vested interest in photography, and totes his SLR with him to most places. He even has a photoblog over at Flickr that he updates whenever he can (http://www.flickr.com/ryanwbermuda). Living on a such a small island can be tough at times, but Ryan, along with his family and friends, works out just fine.
