Despite my love for the subgenre, I have not featured much in the way of steampunk music in my column. A large part of that is simply because there are tons of lists already out there, and I feel like I’d just be rehashing them. But whenever I do get a chance, I try to do so. And this Kickstarter for a new Unwoman album is a good opportunity to do just that.
Unwoman creates music for steampunks primarily using her sparse cello. It’s a perfect instrument for the genre (at least as played by Unwoman; I’m not so sure that Yo-Yo Ma would make such a great steampunk. Although that might be kind of awesome…). Couple it with primitive beats and a darkwave feel and you have a perfect soundtrack for reading Boneshaker.
What I’m Getting
I’ve decided to splurge a little on this one since I was planning on buying pretty much everything anyway. I’m going with the $52 reward level. At this level, I get everything Unwoman has recorded on a USB drive plus a poster. It also includes a digital photobook (which, if it’s anything like these photos, should be really cool).
What Else Is Available
For just one measly dollar, you can get the new album in MP3 format. Raise that to $10 and you add in a poster or postcard set. The physical CD is just $20, and the vinyl version is only $40. Upper levels include a house concert ($600 plus travel expenses) and a song poem ($325). Actually, that sums up every level on this one.
What Else Is Cool
I’ve previously mentioned Unwoman’s cover of “Careless Whisper,” and it’s no secret that I’m a fan of covers, so it’s worth mentioning her entire cover album which can be listened to on Bandcamp. If you’re a fan of ’80s music, it’s well worth checking out.
This Kickstarter has gone well beyond its funding goal, but that doesn’t mean you can’t help. You have until July 16 on this one, so go get yourself some cool steampunk music!
