I love Welcome to Night Vale. It’s just hard for me to keep a constant interest with only two podcasts a month. A week ago I decided to catch up. What I really was interested in was the live recording featuring Mara Wilson and the new voice of lovely Carlos, Dylan Marron. You have to donate whatever you amount you want to get it on Bandcamp. I donated a dollar (hey, I have a wedding to pay for). Then it was time to listen and be entertained.
The best thing about the show was all the characters interacting with each other. There should be more shows like this. Cecil and Carlos were talking back and forth during the show. I squealed a little when Carlos wanted them to get a place together. Mara Wilson appeared as the Faceless Old Woman that lives in your house. She had plenty of witty banter. Hiram McDaniels, the six-headed dragon, made a recording too. It was a lot of new and fresh character dynamics. Mara Wilson made the Faceless Woman adorable. It was Night Vale magic.
The story itself was odd and typical for the show. Black, square cubes being advertised as condos have appeared in Night Vale and are trapping its citizens. The cutest and greatest part is when Cecil goes into one to rescue Carlos. It’s so full of feels. I was hanging onto every word instead of drifting in and out. The traffic segment is pretty funny in a morbid way. It felt like the Night Vale of earlier podcasts.
My only complaint is that the recording sounded really scratchy. It don’t think it was my computer. It almost sounded like Cecil’s voice was static. The quality was just really terrible in some spots. So, other than the audio the podcast was great. It was enough to renew my consistent listening to the series. If you have some spare change, check out “Condos”!
