We are slowly progressing through the plot, moving the characters towards new locations and potentially new revelations. But how the pieces all tie together is still a mystery. Hope we get a few answers soon.
Note: This recap may contain spoilers!
This felt very much like a filler issue. There weren’t really any new ramifications that directly affected the characters just yet. Instead, we got the continual press of danger from the Empty Man. For now, though, at least Melissa and her family are safe.
Monica and Owen manage to get the family out of their house, but they’re immediately attacked by the bug creature embodiment of the Empty Man. The creature and Monica aren’t so far removed from one another, as he says when pinning her to the ground. Despite her refusal to admit the same, the infection running within her begs to differ. Perhaps she will succumb one day, but for now she and Owen are determined to keep her and the Kerry family safe from harm.
Even though they staved off attack from the other infected individuals, got the slip on The Whispers, and sequestered themselves in a motel, they’re not really out of danger. The bug is still tracking them, as are The Whispers, and Monica’s balancing precariously on the edge of being overwhelmed by her infection should her medication run out. Owen knows she’s infected, just like Melissa, and Monica also shares what motivates her to continue the fight even though she’s been on administrative leave for a while. It’s all tied to her former partner, Walter Langford, and where he currently resides. He left this plane to try to figure out how to kill the Empty Man’s consciousness. Monica keeps fighting in hopes she can bring Walter back.
It feels like the spread of the Empty Man virus is never-ending. And, as Monica points out, it’s possibly been affecting people for longer than they think. It’s been growing since the dawn of time and is now reaching a turning point of visibility. The Whisper Oracles and the formerly-kidnapped children are certainly making that point. And even though Melissa has managed to slip away from them once, the threat of capture is still there. Monica, Owen, and the Kerry family have to be on alert whenever they deem to venture out again. And they also need to make sure Monica and Melissa remain medicated, otherwise the physical embodiment of the Empty Man will not be their only problem.
I’m looking forward to seeing where we go next issue. Will there be more action and threats looming? Or will we get another bridging for the plot? Hopefully we’ll at least get more information about the world as it exists now and what might be coming from humanity as a whole.
