The final issue of City of the Damned picks up with Crispin facing off against David Sterling. Sterling is explaining what he is doing and why he is doing it.
Note: This recap may contain spoilers!
Years ago, when Sterling was alive, a polymath came to his village with a “telescope he claimed could see into heaven”. The people mocked the man, but gazed into his telescope and found out he was right, so they began building a city to destroy God. Sterling invites Crispin to look into Sterling’s telescope to see the truth for himself. Whatever Crispin sees makes him stumble; however, Lucifuge arrives and attacks Sterling.
Meanwhile, Roy is killing everything that comes his way and is soon surprised by Lucifuge falling near him. Sterling has hurt the demon badly. Lucifuge tells Roy to kill him, as it’s the only way to stop Sterling. Back upstairs, Crispin and Sterling fight, with Sterling getting the upper hand until Roy shows up. Together they manage to stop Sterling permanently, although he gloats that he’s planted a seed of doubt in Crispin’s mind. The comic then skips forward to the present where Roy is partnered up with Nick Walker.
This really makes me want to see the movie, which is probably the point. The dialogue is funny and smart. There is a lot of showing, but not telling, which adds to the mystery and drama of the comic. Hopefully one day we will see what Sterling and Crispin saw. I thought it was a good ending for the series and it flowed together really well.
