Z-Man games, the creators of the fantastic plague-based board game Pandemic, have announced their next project, Pandemic Legacy. The original Pandemic game casts players as experts in the fields of science, military, and logistics as they travel around the world and work together to research and squash new diseases that threaten the planet. In the vein of Risk Legacy, this new version of Pandemic will chain multiple play sessions together into an expanding and evolving storyline.
Risk Legacy has players carrying their results from one game forward to influence the beginning world state and goals of the following game sessions, and the game mechanics also throw surprises into the mix in the form of secrets and twists that are revealed by opening envelopes at specified times in the campaign. Pandemic Legacy sounds like it will borrow this episodic format to turn what already is an enthralling and tense board game into an epic tale. Here’s the official announcement from Z-Man’s Facebook page:
Game Announcement: Pandemic Legacy!
You’ve heard the rumors, you’ve wondered, you’ve questioned! Today, it is official: Pandemic Legacy will be making its way to the Z-Man Games collection!
Designers Matt Leacock and Rob Daviau (designer of Risk Legacy) are working very hard at developing this project and making it come to life!
One year. One team. One hope.
Pandemic Legacy starts what will be one of the worst years in human history. Whether it is the worst year is up to the players, who must band together to save the world. Unlike Pandemic, actions taken in one game will affect all future games. Characters will change. Some may be lost. Heroes will emerge. And, of course, there are the diseases, which start under control but soon… Can you save humanity? So much more to come about Pandemic Legacy, will you be ready?
They also released a mockup of the Pandemic Legacy box (above) and a heavily redacted letter from game designer Matt Leacock (below).
