I wanted to get a couple of these videos featured in a timely manner, so there aren’t quite as many as usual. I’ll be making up for that soon with lists of covers and also parodies, so look for those in the next couple of weeks.
Kim Boekbinder – “Chocolate Mermaid”
I would save this for my parodies list, but it’s an ephemeral release, only available until June 21, 2014 (you can also buy it on Bandcamp if you want to keep it forever). It’s a parody of “Chocolate Jesus” by Tom Waits, but about mermaids. Wonderful!
Adam Sakellarides – “Like to Go Karting (A Mario Kart 8 Song)”
I’ve never actually played any of the Mario Kart games (I have no idea how that happened, but there it is…), but I know enough about the game to appreciate this song. Plus it’s a fun, catchy tune. Thanks to Adam for sending it to me!
They Might Be Giants – “Am I Awake?”
TMBG recently held a contest for fans to create videos for this song. These are the three winners. I love the way they all have a different interpretation of the song. All of them are really good.
TMBG “Fingertips” Star Wars
Speaking of They Might Be Giants… David Taylor synced up various scenes from Star Wars to all of the little songs that constitute “Fingertips” from Apollo 18. It’s a few years old (posted on my birthday, weirdly enough), but our esteemed editor Celeste just shared it on Facebook so I had to share it here, too.
Devo Spice – “Lost in Time”
Devo Spice’s song for the second Doctor is also about the BBC losing / taping over so many of the older episodes of Doctor Who. And it fits in every title that’s missing, too. Very cool!
Star Wars Cantina Band Auditions
Sure, this has well over a million views on YouTube, so it doesn’t really need any boost I might give it (which, admittedly, won’t be much), but it’s enjoyable so here it is. Each of the audtionees (is that a word? You know what I mean…) also has bonus videos, but I’ll specifically mention mc chris since he falls under my normal geek music purview.
Sir Mix-a-Lot with the Seattle Symphony – “Baby Got Back”
And lastly, I just have to feature this; it’s not particularly geeky, but it’s WAY better than it has any right to be. Go watch it!
