I’m sure most of you have read the news that the famed San Francisco sci-fi bookstore, Borderlands, is going out of business. While this is sad news for all fans of sci-fi, there’s a new venture that’s attempting to start something similar in Charlotte, NC. I may not live anywhere near either city, but I prefer to live in a world where such a bookstore exists. You can help make that a reality by supporting this Kickstarter for Worlds of Wonder. And this bookstore will even include a bar for all your pre-adventuring needs (or at least to hang out with your fellow nerds)!
What I’m Getting
As I said, I love the idea of this sort of bookstore and bar existing, and I’d really love to have something like it near where I live. That’s why I’m supporting this Kickstarter even though I may never end up visiting. I’m also somewhat of a practical person, so the $15 level with a pint glass, bookmark, and sticker seems about right to me.
What Else Is Available
There are “Don’t Panic — go to Worlds of Wonder” towels available at the $10 level. Or you could get just the pint glass at that level. A $20 pledge gets you a patch with their logo on it. If you need some apparel, there’s a t-shirt for $30 and a fez for $50. At the middle levels, you can sponsor a shelf ($200), get cool stuff every month ($375) or every other month for a year ($225), or promote your logo on the Worlds of Wonder tote bags ($400). And it wouldn’t be a Kickstarter without some cool high end stuff like sponsoring a whole bookcase ($1500) or having your name on your own barstool ($2000, and it also includes a drink named after you!).
What Else Is Cool
Now I have an excuse to go up to Charlotte for concerts with The Thoughtcriminals / Mikal kHill / Sulfur. Or maybe a place to drop by if I have a long layover at my favorite airport (seriously — those rocking chairs are so cool!).
The goal for this Kickstarter is set pretty high for obvious reasons, and they could really use your support. If you, like me, want to live in a world where this sort of bookstore and bar exists, show them some love, even if it’s just a dollar. Every little bit helps; that’s what crowdfunding is all about!
