Kicking off a 5-issue event, we are exploring the opening of the Hellmouth and all the tragedies that might entail. Buffy, Angel, and the rest of the crew are certainly in for a dangerous time thanks to Dru’s determination.
Note: This recap may contain spoilers!
We start off with Dru talking about unleashing her destruction as she controls the Hellmouth and its power. Poor William was just a part of her plan, the key to kicking off the whole event. Stabbing him brought forth the blood of a demon and activated the Hellmouth, but it’s not open just yet. For that, she will need to complete the spell with the blood of a mortal.
Across town, Anya is watching everything transpire from afar. She is packing up her store and getting ready to move. Despite Giles begging her to help them stop what’s to come, she refuses. She’s seen cities fall before, worlds destroyed, but no matter how much she intervenes it will not change the outcome. The fate of the world rests on Buffy’s shoulders alone. Hopefully she can withstand the burden.
Over at the high school, Buffy and Xander are taking refuge in the library, where they find Robin. They are soon interrupted by Cordelia, who overhears them talking about who they are, so she’s clued in a bit as to the strangeness that exists in Sunnydale. Added to that is the tall, dark stranger that keeps showing up around Buffy. Angel busts in trying to locate the opening for the Hellmouth, which he doesn’t find in the library, then just walks out again. So mysterious and weird, it only fuels Buffy to figure out who he is and what role he plays in all of this.
It’s not like they have a lot of time to be solving other mysteries on top of fighting monsters. Xander feels Dru drawing closer and tells Buffy to be careful. Something big is about to happen and she will have to face it alone while the others get to safety. Well, semi-alone, since she happens to find Angel during her advancement toward danger. And despite his warnings to just stay away, she refuses. If the fight is coming, she wants to be in the middle of it.
Unfortunately, the situation soon turns from bad to worse. Buffy stumbles upon the dead body of the girl Robin was dancing with before. The dead girl was the mortal blood Dru needed to complete her spell and now the Hellmouth is open. While Buffy doesn’t know what awaits her on the other side, she jumps in ready to fight for the preservation of Sunnydale and her friends, as well as the rest of the world. Hope she makes it back in one piece, and that the world she left behind is still standing upon her return.
