As 2019 draws to a close, we’re sticking to our annual tradition of appreciating our favorite geeky things from the past year. Yesterday we began by looking at some of the biggest disappointments of 2019. With the negativity out of the way, today we’re turning to the positive side of the year. We polled the Fandomania staff to find out what everyone’s favorite movies for 2019 were, and here are the results.

Avengers: Endgame

“This was the end of an era and prompted a whole lot of tears from me. As a closing chapter to the original six, I liked that each character got focus and attention, even if their endings weren’t always happy. And I will forever love Tony Stark 3000.” – Kimberly Lynn Workman

“It finished the Avengers saga in a bittersweet and wonderful way. The world was saved and heroes reunited. I also enjoyed the amazing CG and diverging character arcs.” – Mandi Harris

Captain Marvel

“As an origin story, this allowed us to get a good grasp of the character and a chance to look forward to the future. Plus, the secret of Fury’s eye was revealed! Good humor mixed with good action, a win-win.” – Kimberly Lynn Workman

“Girl power to the max. I fully enjoyed this Marvel installment. Carol Danvers is the mightiest superhero in this universe!” – Mandi Harris

Knives Out

“After not being a fan of Looper or The Last Jedi, it was with more than a little trepidation that I went to see Knives Out. This turned out to be my favorite movie of the year, and I sincerely hope Rian Johnson’s career from this point forward is all about making clever murder mysteries just like this one.” – Jason

Spider-Man: Far From Home

“This superhero installment was fun, yet serious. Peter trying to survive in a post Iron Man world added depth to the typical superhero storyline. The surprise twist at the end makes me look forward to another movie.” – Mandi Harris

Good Boys

“Usually, these types of movies about friendships are reserved for girls of various ages or teenage boys. So I appreciated the new perspective as much as I did the amount of heart it packed in between the hilarious, disgusting humor that held it high above so many other movies I walked across the street to watch at my local theater.” – Kendra Beltran

Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood

“I’ve always been a big Tarantino fan but had gotten a little tired of his western period pieces. Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood was exactly the sort of retro bonkers story I wanted from him, and it arrived full of amazing performances and surprising twists.” – Jason

Shazam

“Movies from the DC universe have been hit or miss, but this one was definitely a winner! With humor delivered quite well by the incomparable Zachary Levi, I was drawn in from start to finish.” – Kimberly Lynn Workman

Booksmart

“I’m a sucker for coming of age dramadies, especially when they’re done as well as Booksmart. It’s a crime (literally, given the amount of piracy that’s partly to blame) that this movie didn’t do better at the box office.” – Jason

Men in Black International

“I love Chris Hemsworth and the MiB universe. Pair that with the witty Tess Thompson and you have a recipe for comedy gold. The plot might not have been memorable, but the banter certainly was.” – Kimberly Lynn Workman

Pokemon Detective Pikachu

“All one has to do to make a movie excellent is put Ryan Reynolds’s voice in it. Enough said.” – Kendra Beltran

Rocketman

“Elton John is a lifelong musical hero of mine, and it would have been very easy for this movie to have fallen short and disappointed me. Thankfully, it hit all the right notes by leaning hard into being a musical instead of just a movie about music, and Taron Egerton is perfect as Elton.” – Jason

Us

“The horror genre exploration by Jordan Peele continues to draw me in. I found this venture quite fulfilling and left me pondering its reflection on society as a whole. And the twist ending left me wanting to rewatch to pick up all the clues I might have missed.” – Kimberly Lynn Workman

Toy Story 4

“Did we need another Toy Story? No. The third one wrapped it up and put a glorious bow on top, but they somehow found a way to expand on a story that already had a perfect ending and that’s something to applaud. Plus, we were introduced to the most millennial character to ever exist, Forky. How could I not love and relate to a piece of trash that was self-aware of his trashiness?!” – Kendra Beltran

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum

“I came into the John Wick series late, just seeing the first two movies for the first time this year. I had no idea what I’ve been missing out on. The third chapter continued the worldbuilding and amped up fight scenes of the previous ones, making this the most intriguing action franchise currently running.” – Jason

The Angry Birds Movie 2

“I’ve never played the game nor do I have kids but I was there opening weekend when the first Angry Birds Movie came out and no surprise, I loved it. While Disney can still churn out a hit, their humor that can sometimes verge on corny is no match for what my beloved Birds bring to the table. While it wasn’t as great as the first (the plot of the first had more heart), it was still one of the funniest things I saw all year. If you don’t think the bathroom scene with the eagle is golden, you don’t know funny. Bottom line.” – Kendra Beltran
