Sometimes, you just find a character and series you love on Netflix. Murdoch Mysteries is one of those shows that I’ve gotten addicted to on the binge-watching service. I like a good old-fashioned mystery show with a fun cast of characters. The show fits the bill and it’s a Canadian period drama. The show has a fun steampunk/Sherlock Holmes feel that makes it unique. And, as the column indicates, I fell in love with the main character from the first episode.
Who is He?
Detective William Murdoch is the main protagonist on CBC’s Murdoch Mysteries based on the novels by Maureen Jennings. The character is played by the amazing Yannick Bisson. Murdoch is a man of logic and science who uses these skills to solve crimes. He is a less hyper version of Sherlock Holmes. He is also a gentleman who respects everyone around him. He gives his coworkers, male and female, the same amount of his respect. Murdoch always gets his criminal with his brilliance. Additionally, Murdoch likes to spend his time making inventions that are years ahead of his time.
Fun Fact:
Murdoch has a photographic memory and spent his teenage years working at a logging camp.
Why So Crushworthy?
- Those stunning brown eyes with amazing lashes.
- That wonderful, melodious voice.
Excuse me, I got carried away for a moment. Murdoch really is a complex and interesting character. His intelligence is superb and he uses it to solve crimes. He looks beyond the obvious to find the truth. This tendency has gotten Murdoch in hot water, but he always manages to save the day. Murdoch is a true gentleman in all the best ways. He is kind to everyone and treats each person equally. Even when he meets someone that challenges his way of thinking, he considers their stance and refines his opinion. Murdoch is a bit emotionally ignorant, but in an endearing way. He keeps his feelings locked away unless it concerns his true love, Julia.
I have a weakness for characters with a hidden streak of passion. William Murdoch has it under a wall of calm composure. It comes out on occasion and it unexpected ways. He often daydreams about grabbing Julia and kissing her passionately. One time he even shot a man to defend the life of another woman. He rarely raises his voice, but he makes his point without doing so. Murdoch is a knight in a black hat who wants justice for everyone. He is the perfect character to have at your side.
