Once Upon a Time is great about introducing characters that are interesting and then you never see them again. One of my favorites has not been seen since season two. Of course, I understand the actor needed time to film a certain Marvel movie but I miss him just the same. He was quirky, a little nuts, and handsome for a supposed crazy man. I really wish he would make another appearance on the show. After all, they never said where he went!
Who is He?
Jefferson, also known as the Mad Hatter, was played by Sebastion Stan on ABC’s Once Upon a Time. He appeared in season one and briefly in season two. He was working for Regina and Rumplestiltskin back in the Enchanted Forest. He had it rough there. Wonderland isn’t better since he got his head cut off (but reattached) by the Queen of Hearts. He endured all this nuttiness to get his daughter back. In Storybrooke, he does more loony things because he remembers the curse and is afraid to get back into his daughter’s life. Still, he ranks on the crushworthy meter.
Fun Fact:
Jefferson survived being beheaded by the Queen of Hearts and she forced him to make hats so she could return to the Enchanted Forest.
Why So Crushworthy?
Because he is played by Sebastian Stan, that’s why!
The End.
Just kidding, that isn’t all of it. I like this version of the Mad Hatter. He’s always been one of the most fascinating Alice in Wonderland characters. Unlike the Johnny Depp version, his did not creep me out. He played a man driven crazy by knowledge he couldn’t do anything about. He wasn’t over the top with it, either. He came close in Wonderland making hats but it never reached the level of dancing strangely. He wasn’t just a Hatter, either. He was a father who deeply loved his child and he wanted to keep her happy. He went to great lengths to get her back in the Enchanted Forest. Later, he was so worried about messing up her happiness he wouldn’t approach her in Storybrooke. Jefferson was a very complex and intriguing Mad Hatter.
Another part of his appeal is that you didn’t know if he was good or bad at first. In a world where most of the characters on the show are good or evil, his ambiguity was refreshing. You didn’t know if he was going to help the good guys or protect his own skin by aiding the bad ones. His good side won out on the end — or his hatred of Regina trumped all his misgivings. He was down with getting revenge. I wonder how he would react to the new Regina. What sort of adventures would he get into? Jefferson needs to come back. His complex and amazing version of the Mad Hatter really boosted my interest in the show. He became my first crush on the show.
At least I still have Hook.
