Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files was my choice of books for a few months during my time overseas. I had always heard about them but never checked them out until then. I was hooked after book one. This book series has an awesome array of characters. Who doesn’t love Bob the skull? One of my favorite female characters from the series comes along a little later. She becomes an important character as the series goes one. Like the books, she was interesting from the start.

Who is She?
Molly is the daughter of a Knight of the Cross and a something close to a shield maiden. Molly had a normal — well, mostly normal — childhood. She was exposed to her father being a Knight but was kept out of the real hairy business. She starts discovering her wizard powers as a teenager. After Harry sees her power, his takes her on as a student, which also saves her life. Molly starts out as a goth chick with out-of-control powers and evolves into a powerful wizard.
Fun Facts:
- Harry’s nickname for Molly is Grasshopper.
- Molly is better at more sensitive forms of magic, while Harry is better at combat magic.
- Molly has a long-standing crush on Harry.
- Molly comes close to destroying Harry’s lab along with herself.
- Molly takes on the persona the Rag Lady after Harry’s “demise”.
Why So Crushworthy?
Molly was the rebellious, magical teen I never was. I wanted to have powers and dye my hair multiple colors. I think I was too apathetic to actually rebel. I did cosplay, does that count? Molly was a girl caught in the supernatural since birth. That right there is a guarantee that she was meant for interesting times. Molly is a brave girl stuck in a bratty package at first. She uses her magic to interfere with some of her friends and that leads to a death sentence being laid on her if she messes up again. Molly realizes it’s time to start being wise and has to grow up overnight.
Molly is always tempted into using magic for dark purposes; yet, with her strong will and her desire to do good, she overcomes the urges. Molly is very protective of the people she loves. She would do anything for them. Her strength is tempered with vulnerability. She believes she will never be a good enough wizard. Of course, this is not true. She is just as good as Harry but in a different way magically. She is very smart and manages to outwit enemies many times. Harry trusts her enough to take her to the outmatched battle at Chichen Itza. Molly’s path is full of darkness but she manages to stay in the light each time. I admire her brains, beauty, and willpower. Molly Carpenter isn’t a character to be taken lightly. She is certainly worthy of a crush.
