One of the most entertaining animes I’ve watched is Hellsing. It has awesome music, interesting storylines, and an array of strange characters. There are plenty of animes about vampires — you have Vampire Princess Miyu, Blood Plus, and Trinity Blood. I think Hellsing is still one of the best of the genre, and a good deal of that fame comes from its main vampire, Alucard.
Stats:
Full Name: Vlad Dracula III, Alucard (way too many aliases!)
Age: 568-599
Occupation: Vampire Hitman for the Hellsing Organization
Who is He?
Alucard is the main male vampire in Hirano Kouta’s manga Hellsing, which was later made into an anime. Alucard works as a hitman and bodyguard for the Hellsing organization. He answers to Sir Integra but most of the time he does what he likes. He claims to be Vlad the Impaler himself. His was voiced by Nakata Jouji and Crispin Freeman in the Japanese and English versions, respectively.
Fun Facts:
- Alucard’s guns are named .454 Casull and the Jackal.
- It is said that Alucard cannot be defeated or destroyed.
- Alucard changed into a female form during World War II.
- Alucard was never clear on why he turned Seras Victoria — some say on a whim.
- Another one of Dracula’s progeny is Mina Harker.
Why So Crushworthy?
Alucard is just so much fun. He is a vampire and he doesn’t have a problem with it. He doesn’t try to become more human. He doesn’t go to high school. He has better things to do than sit around and brood. He doesn’t seem to mind being a hitman for the Hellsing organization, either. I like characters who know who they are and enjoy it. He does value humanity but he is not really concerned about joining it. Another thing I like about Alucard is his snarkiness. He usually has a quip for every situation. It’s much better than reflecting about the misery of eternity.
Alucard can kick some major butt. He can shapeshift into dozens of deadly shapes and survive any attack. He knows how to take down the enemy in style. His red coat is awesome. I guess he set the style for many other game and anime characters who wear red coats. Yes, he was before Devil May Cry! So he is the fashion trend setter. I really liked his relationship with Seras. Some say it is a father/daughter relationship, but it looks like more a crazy uncle thing to me. He picks on her affectionately and that reveals a less murderous side of Alucard. It’s a fun dynamic to watch. Alucard will always be at the top of the list for coolest vampires ever.
