One of the reasons I started this column was to introduce people to lesser known characters. I decided to get back to the roots of Crushworthy Characters this week. There are only two books in the series that this week’s article focuses on. However, those books are really good. Melissa F. Olson’s Boundary Magic series introduces many interesting characters and plot lines. Instead of focusing on supernatural romance, it highlights the struggles of a veteran trying to protect her family.
Who is She?
Allison “Lex” Luther is the main protagonist in Melissa F. Olson’s Boundary Magic series. Lex is a military veteran who gets the shock of her life when it is revealed she is a boundary witch. A boundary witch uses magic based in life and death. Lex can drain the life out of someone or bring them back from death. Lex is a strong-willed woman who is determined to protect her niece and her city from threats.
Fun Fact:
Lex has a houseful of rescue dogs and cats. I love a character that loves animals.
Why So Crushworthy?
Lex is a deeply flawed character. She came back with PTSD after being discharged from the military. Her family, especially her twin sister and niece, become her lifelines. After the death of her sister, Lex steps it up to help her baby niece. Lex gets a lot of bad things thrown at her, but she manages to survive. It also doesn’t affect her ability to love. Lex will go as far she can to make sure her loved ones are safe. She even makes a deal with the local vampire coven to keep her niece protected. Lex is a selfless character who is one tough cookie.
Lex realizes her flaws and tries to work around them. She understands that she is now walking a dangerous line with her new powers. She must not only fight against her past scars; now she must fight against and learn about her new powers. Lex is a bit out of touch with pop culture, which makes her a bit adorable. Her friend Simon makes numerous pop culture references that only confuse her. Lex isn’t an over-the-top tough chick. She isn’t out to prove how big and bad she is to people. Lex just wants to live simply and do the right thing.
