Alright, I’m back once again with a recap of Captain Midnight issues 21-24. Number 24 is the newest issue I have, so that recap will be longer than the others and contain mild spoilers!
Issue #21
Most of the issue takes place in Arcadia, with X. It kind of reminds me of Gotham and Batman, but it’s a city that has been destroyed by war. X will do anything to keep it safe. Helios is with Midnight, but he is keeping something hidden. Earlier, Joyce told Midnight something that she knew about Helios, but the readers aren’t privy to that information just yet. Back in Arcadia, Helios and Midnight meet up with X. Helios and X don’t get along, but Midnight is able to get X to lead them to The Mark, who is also fighting against the Archon. Just as they are about to leave, Midnight’s jet explodes and the four are faced with some of the Archon’s men. Meanwhile, Jones and Charlotte infiltrate Black Sky’s base with the help of Goody. They find what they are looking for, but also find trouble in the shape of Mr. Hollow.
Issue #22
Midnight, Helios, The Mark, and X all battle Phang, who was once Fury Shark’s man, and his men given to him by the Archon. It’s a tough fight, leaving X wounded; however, he kills Phang before Phang can give all the information to Midnight. The others teleport away and discuss what the Archon could be after. Midnight figures it must be the alien spaceship given to him by Black Sky all those years ago. In the meantime, Jones and Charlotte face off against Mr. Hollow. Unfortunately for them, Hollow punches the Vault, breaking it open. A deadly alien begins to attack everyone. Jones and Charlotte manage to get out, only to have the Archon arrive at Midnight’s base and begin an attack.
Issue #23
This issue starts off with a thoom! Jones, Charlotte, and Goody are barely holding their own against the Archon and his men. Finally, Midnight arrives with Helios and The Mark in tow. Skyman and X show up as well to help the fight. The group makes room so The Mark and the Archon can have a showdown. As they fight, the rest of the team keeps the minions back. Midnight, Helios, and Goody go off to try another tactic. Helios decides that he will keep the Archon distracted, telling Midnight to tell Charlotte that he is something to her. The only thing I can think of is that he is her father, but it’s never explicitly stated. The Mark loses to the Archon and so does Helios. Midnight does the only thing he can think of: put on Chuck’s suit and fight the Archon head on.
Issue #24
The final issue of this run begins with a flashback to 1943, when Midnight went missing. He was chasing Fury Shark and ran into two things: a strange lightning storm and an alien spaceship. Then suddenly he was in the present. It explains a lot of what is happening in the fight between Midnight and the Archon. While that is happening, the others finish the fight against the minions and race off to find Midnight.
Midnight and the Archon are destroying the base, falling through floors and blasting through walls. They “talk” about how the Archon wants to “save” the world. Midnight knows, though, that the Archon will never save the world, only destroy it. Eventually they end up where the Archon wanted to be in the first place, the spaceship. They fight some more and Midnight wonders aloud why he was transported through time, and he realizes it was to stop the Archon.
There is a massive explosion, which the Archon crawls out of, but there is no sign of Midnight. X leaves on his own, while The Mark and Skyman team up to track down the Archon. Jones, Goody, and Charlotte are left behind to pick up the pieces. The issue shifts to later on — maybe a week or more has passed. The Archon has what he wanted and plans to dominate the world; however, his plans are interrupted when his building explodes. The issue ends with a full page of Midnight and friends, watching and waiting to make their next move.
I really like how this ended. I’m hoping more of Captain Midnight is coming as there are still plenty of loose ends to tie up, and a sequel could definitely be in the works. I’d love to read more about Midnight and his friends, especially as they continue to chip away at the Archon’s power base. The last page was great, seeing everyone together and ready to fight. I don’t want to spoil it, so I’ll just leave it at that.
