DC Comics has made a lot of missteps when it comes to representing women (or, you know, humans in general) in comics, especially since the big reset that lead into the New 52 universe. But hark! What’s that? There’s a step in the right direction, thanks to some newly revealed art. Batgirl will be getting a new creative team starting with issue #35 this October, and along with new writers and a artist comes a brand new costume that blows the doors off just about every other superheroine costume you’ll see in 2014 comics. Cameron Stewart and Brenden Fletcher will be the scribes at the helm of the new era of Batgirl, and Babs Tarr will be taking over the art duties. Tarr and Stewart talked with MTV about their redesign of Barbara Gordon’s costume, and they discussed the origins of the new look:
“Barbara is forced to make a new costume for herself when her old one becomes unavailable. The new one is something she’s able to make herself, shopping at the various boutique and vintage stores in Burnside. It also reflects her youth and style. Unlike Batman or Batwoman, she no longer needs to stay in the shadows, and in fact learns to embrace the spotlight.”
Batgirl #35 is scheduled to go on sale October 8, and here’s the official blurb for the issue from DC Comics:
“Barbara Gordon is no stranger to dusting herself off when disaster strikes… so when a fire destroys everything she owned, she spots the opportunity for a new lease on life — and seizes it! Following the rest of Gotham’s young adults to the hip border district of Burnside, Barbara sets about building an all-new Batgirl… and discovers all-new threats preying on her peers! It’s a re-invention of Batgirl from the boots up, by the incredible creative team of Cameron Stewart (BATMAN INC.), Brenden Fletcher (WEDNESDAY COMICS), and rising star artist Babs Tarr!”
