The issue circles around sacrifices and choices, as well as the repercussions of each. Gunn has become possessed by the demon that has been tormenting Detective Kate. He wants her and will stop at nothing to achieve his goal, even if that means taking down a member of Team Angel in the process. While Kate is brought to safety by Spike, Angel continues to fight for his friend in hopes he can defeat the demon and make him release his hold on Gunn.
Meanwhile, Fred is accepting her gift and connecting more with Baphomet. It is the only way to save Gunn, and it is her true destiny. When she fully accepts Baphomet on the other plane of existence, he joins with her and gives Fred his full power to stop evil. What ensues is a montage of glorious action where she takes on the demon and becomes energized by the power inside her. It is a successful outcome for Gunn, as Fred incapacitates the thing possessing him and allows Spike and Angel to finally kill it permanently. But what did it cost them?
Later that night, Team Angel is meeting to go over the events of the day. Both Kate and Gunn are distraught that their safety came at the cost of Fred’s humanity. She has become the devil to save them, but can they save her in return? Lilith says no, that Fred is now Baphomet’s and the only way to destroy him is to destroy Fred in the process. That’s not well-taken by Angel or Gunn, as they are determined to save their friend and defeat evil. They are not ready to admit that they might not be able to do both. I have to believe that they will pull off some miracle and actually allow Fred to live, but the journey is sure to be filled with tragedy along the way. An exciting set-up for things to come!
