We kick off a new series with Angel and his group, though it’s a very different world. With fantasy and reality merging together in a sometimes confusing mix, the series promises to provide new mysteries and old friends.
Note: This recap may contain spoilers!
The main thread throughout the issue is a mysterious man who is seeking to prevent a horrible fate that has occurred in his world. He is a lone, bloody survivor running through the streets of Los Angeles. The man is from another dimension where everyone has been killed by a great evil. He is determined to help his friends in this world, warn them, so they don’t have a repeat of his fate. However, things are different here and those who could have helped have slightly different roles. Or do they?
In this world, Angel for Hire is a TV show. Cordelia plays Detective Kate Lockely and Angel is the co-lead. Gunn is Angel’s agent, while Lindsey is Cordelia’s agent. Lindsey also knows that Angel is a real vampire, which he uses to hang over Angel’s head and get more leave way for his client. Andrew is a stagehand and Angel’s driver, who has a friendship with Lorne. And many of the Angel Investigations members live together in the hotel – Angel, Lorne, Spike, Wesley, and Slayer Fred.
But perhaps reality and fantasy aren’t so far apart. It appears that Angel Investigations is alive and well, so the show is mirroring what Angel and the others do in real life. Spike, Wesley and Fred are out on a case against a possessed mummy corpse. While they are ultimately successful in killing the monster, Wesley is stabbed in the chest by a cursed dagger. They take him back to the hotel to recuperate, but he is fading fast and set to die.
Wesley’s dire state affects everyone. Upon arriving home from an after-party, Angel feels guilty when he learns Wesley’s status. He should have been there, helping them, instead of rubbing elbows with the Hollywood elite. Cordelia’s just freaking out altogether. And Fred’s more pragmatic in her approach. She goes to buy a spirit house, used to home Wesley’s soul when he dies, and brings it back to the hotel.
That’s where we’re left with a confusing cliffhanger. Angel takes hold of the box and goes to some other realm while Wesley wakes up. And then we have the whole mysterious stranger situation that will surely involve the team soon. He shows up at Andrew and Lorne’s door while they are watching television, asking for help. No answers yet, but lots of teasing of exciting things to come!
