The Winchesters 1.07 – “Reflections” Recap

We are at the midseason finale and while some revelations are made, there are still lingering questions surrounding the Akrida and the overall canon of Supernatural in light of The Winchesters.

Note: This recap may contain spoilers!

We kick off the episode with John and Mary casing the radio tower. However, after going inside, the place looks wrecked. No one’s there and the only clue they find is Samuel’s bloodied bag. And outside they find a possessed man locked in the trunk, another worker in the Akrida’s plan. He teases that Samuel is potentially dead, but that makes Mary even the more determined to find her father.

Convening back at the clubhouse, there seems to be two cases to work. Firstly is Mary’s search for Samuel. There’s a key to the motel inside his bag, so she and Carlos take that clue and go check out the motel. Meanwhile, the rest of the team need to get the box, the Ostium, working again by re-energizing it. Ada found some old Men of Letters research, written in Henry’s handwriting, so John brings in Millie to help decipher it.

After Carlos and Mary discover nothing useful at the motel, they get pulled over by a cop working for Roxy. Carlos is sequestered into the back of a patrol car while Roxy speaks with Mary. She wants to make a trade – Samuel for the Ostium. And seemingly Mary agrees, but meanwhile Carlos has put a hex bag in the back of the patrol car so Ada can later track down the location and help them take down Roxy once and for all.

The threads of the story start coming together. During their research, the team finds that the Ostium doesn’t kill monsters, but rather transports them. However, if they can use the box on the queen, it cuts off the connections with the workers and they will succeed. Seems simple enough. Power up the box, go meet Roxy, use the box on her, end of discussion. But that’s only if Roxy is the true queen. As we later learn, that may not be the case.

To energize the box, they use instructions for a spirit session to call forth Henry. Their first attempt does not work, much to John’s frustration, but later he lets his true feelings about his parents’ situation come forth and that allows Henry to appear. He gives them the location of a hidden energy source, stored in the vines covering the garage. Before he disappears, he tells John he’s proud of him and that he loves both John and Millie. There are still questions of how the canon of The Winchesters aligns with Supernatural, since there seem to be more contradictions, but I trust in the process.

Mary and John face off against Roxy, and Mary does use the box on her, but it doesn’t work on the other creatures as they expect. So, Roxy isn’t the true queen. And we soon learn that the queen is hidden behind a door, which we saw earlier in the episode. We still never got a glimpse of her, but that’s something to be explored in the second half of the season. So, too, is the aftermath of Samuel’s reappearance. He appears and takes down the remaining creatures before collapsing, injured.

I’m glad we got to see Samuel before the midseason ended, but we’re left with the case of the Akrida queen. Can they take her down before she destroys the world? Will Samuel recover and help them? Will all these canonical contradictions eventually make sense? Stay turned to find out!
