First Impressions of ‘Midnight, Texas’

Another Charlaine Harris series has made it to the small screen in the form of Midnight, Texas. The show premiered last Monday on NBC. It follows the mysterious adventures of Manfred Bernardo, psychic extraordinaire, as he parks his RV in Midnight. Manfred is played by François Arnaud, who is a favorite actor of mine. The story has many interesting elements and supernatural creatures. I’ve been a tad jaded with supernatural and fantasy shows lately. I gave up on Once Upon a Time because they were dragging out so many storylines. Midnight, Texas made a good first impression on me and here is why.

  • The visuals of the show were not bad. I liked how they made the ghosts look. Also, the props and buildings for the town gave it a rugged and mysterious look.
  • Excepting two characters, I was interested in the cast. I’m looking forward to seeing the characters revealed and their stories. The talking cat was especially sassy.
  • I’m biased, but I love François Arnaud. He always gives a great performance as a mysterious character.

  • Charlaine Harris adds the supernatural to mundane life in a unique way. Midnight, Texas has the same fun and quirky feel as True Blood. Yes, I know that show went off the rails, but the books were amazing. The feel of the show is great so far.
  • The pace of the show is well done. I don’t know if it will keep the pace, but it gets all the good plot points in and also develops back stories. It’s not crowded with too much fluff.
  • Manfred is not an over the top powerful being, nor is he a weakling. I like the balance of that and it gives room for Manfred to grow.

Overall, my first impression of the show is great. It is NBC so I’m worried about the lifespan of the show. I will hope for the best. Check out Midnight, Texas if you have the time!
