This article is a battle of YA genre heroines. Taking the two most currently popular ladies from the genre, we are pitting them against one another in crushworthy battle. The two book/film series inspire girls everywhere to either be like Katniss or Tris. Whether you are a fan of the overall plot or not in either series, they both produced popular female characters. Both of the young women put their lives on the line for the sake of rebellion and protecting those they love. Let’s see how the two ladies compete.
Who Are They?
Katniss Everdeen is the heroine of The Hunger Games Trilogy by Suzanne Collins. She is played by Jennifer Lawrence in the films. Tris Prior saves the day in the Divergent book series by Veronica Roth and is played by Shailene Woodley in the films. Katniss is a girl from District 13 who volunteers for the Hunger Games to save her sister. Later, she gets involved with the rebellion to overthrow the Capitol. Tris turns away from her Abnegation upbringing and joins the Dauntless faction. She joins the fight to take down the system that puts people into factions.
For Katniss
Katniss is a girl focused on survival and protecting her family. She does not hesitate to sacrifice herself. She enters the Games with only one goal in my mind but her life takes many dramatic turns. She never thought she would become the face of the rebellion. Katniss doesn’t fear putting herself in danger to save others. She has problems with accepting help and love from people other than her family. Katniss understands hardship but it’s hard for her to understand Peeta and his kindness. Her hidden vulnerability makes her human while her bow makes her a warrior. She keeps her heart hidden, but slowly learns that it’s okay to show love to different people. She takes down the Capitol by being a good shot and doing what she believes is right.
For Tris
Tris is a like a flower that blooms. She starts out a shy girl who learns that she can choose a faction she never believed possible. She leaves behind what she knows to become Dauntless. Tris never gave up during her hard days of training. She starts to blossom as she finds friends, courage, and love in a place she didn’t think possible. Upon learning that she is divergent and about the corruption of the faction system, Tris vows to fight for freedom. Tris battles her insecurities as well, like any teenage girl. She overcomes her struggles to lead the rebellion with Four/Tobias. Tris proves that all girls are born with courage and strength.
The Verdict
Despite Tris’s qualities, I’m a Katniss fan all the way. I think the way Tris’s stream of thought is written contributed to the verdict. I felt like I was reading Tris’s Twitter account rather than really getting to know her. I feel more affinity with Katniss and her brand of bravery.
