Chad’s New Geek Music Mission

As we move into a new year, it’s a natural time to pause and reflect on the past while also pondering the future. I’ve been writing about geek music for over five years now, and in the past year I’ve even expanded to a podcast. I think it’s time to start making some changes here to better reflect everything that I’m doing, and to give me time to focus on what I truly love about geek music.

First off, I’m not going to do reviews of music about properties I know nothing about unless I’m just completely blown away by the music (e.g. Chamber Band’s Careers). I’ll still promote them on social media, and I’ll include videos on lists, but I find myself being too repetitive when I review those sorts of things. I mean, how many times and ways can I say, “I like the music, but I don’t fully understand the story. If you know the story, you’ll like the music”? Probably not that helpful of a review…

I’ve already been doing shorter reviews, and that’s likely to continue. I might even get rid of the “quickies” category and just do those as reviews. I’m not 100% certain there’s a huge difference between them anyway. In short, it’s a pretty safe bet that most reviews are going to become shorter unless I find myself particularly verbose for whatever reason.

I really want to make the column and podcast more interactive. I’d like to hear more feedback from readers / listeners. I could include a mail / questions section in the podcast if anyone is interested in it and wants to submit stuff to me. I’m definitely going to start soliciting questions for guests of the podcast via Twitter and Facebook, especially since I’m pretty sure I’m going to have some repeat guests on in the next few months. Another idea I thought of is to include fan stories of experiences with geek music. Fans could submit short anecdotes to me as MP3s. It is Fandomania, after all, so let’s celebrate the fans of geek music.

I’m toying with the idea of including some solo episodes of the podcast that include non-geek / geek-adjacent music that I’ve been listening to that I think people might like. I’m also considering posting episodes on YouTube, Bandcamp, and / or Soundcloud if anyone is interested in listening on those sites. Perhaps it could even bring in new listeners, something I’d really like to do.

So there are a few ideas for some changes / refocusing for my role on Fandomania as the geek music guy. If you have any other suggestions or comments, I’d love to hear them. Email me, Tweet me, or comment on this post, and let me know what you think.
