Well, it’s been a long while since I did any reviews, but that is about to change! I’m back with Captain Midnight; however, before I start doing single issue recaps, let’s start with a quick catch-up. These will be quick reviews of the issues leading up to the newest issue. I’m starting off with issues 17-20, there are spoilers in here, but not many, so beware!
Issue #17
A new arc begins here, with Midnight still searching for Chuck. He has no promising leads and takes a small break to go on a date. At the same time, Charlotte and Joyce show up with Helios in tow. The date gets awkward once everyone shows up, but Midnight goes with the group to get an explanation of what is going on. Midnight agrees to fix Helios’s teleportation in exchange for information of Chuck’s whereabouts. Chuck is in a heavily fortified camp, which includes drones, numerous guards, lasers, and a superweapon Chuck has been developing for seventy years. Meanwhile, Chuck is looking at his superweapon and declaring he will save the world.
Issue #18
This picks up right after number seventeen, with the group deciding how to infiltrate Chuck’s base. Midnight would rather go alone, but Charlotte, Joyce, and Jones tell him otherwise. Once in Mexico, they can see that Helios wasn’t lying about the camp being heavily fortified. There is also an unnatural storm brewing over the top of the facility. They make a good start towards the base, but are soon held up by the drones, which destroy everything, even Chuck’s own men. Jones and Joyce get hurt, so Midnight asks Charlotte to take them and run while he finishes this. Charlotte reluctantly agrees and the three of them watch as he flies off. Midnight fights off Chuck’s men before encountering Chuck, who reveals his superweapon: himself, powered by the energy from the freakish storm. The issue ends with Chuck and Midnight just starting their fight.
Issue #19
Issue nineteen begins with a flashback to when Chuck and Midnight first met. Chuck thought Midnight was a hero, while Midnight claimed Chuck was the real hero. In the present, the two old friends are fighting viciously. Chuck is very overpowered and pummels Midnight repeatedly. Midnight fights back, but mainly tries to talk Chuck down and convince him what he is doing is wrong. Chuck only wants to use this power to destroy the Archon, but once he sees what the energy is doing to reality, he sees how wrong he was. Chuck sacrifices himself to save the planet. Midnight returns to the group, saddened, but also hopeful that they can stop Archon.
Issue #20
In this issue, Midnight teams up with Helios to infiltrate one of Black Sky’s bases. He doesn’t need Helios as much as he needs Helios’s teleporting power. Readers still don’t know who he is, even though he seems to know a lot about Midnight and his friends. Helios seems to have some kind of relationship with Black Sky, which would be great to know about. Once in, they cannot teleport out. They get discovered pretty quickly and proceed to fight their way to the server room. Midnight plugs in while Helios fights the Black Sky goons off. Finally, Midnight finishes downloading what he needs, starts a prison break, and he and Helios catch a plane out of there. Midnight didn’t get everything he needed, but he did find the last known location of the Archon.
Next time I’ll be doing quick recaps of issues 21-23, with a longer recap of issue 24. See you then!
