Do you like Star Wars? Can you spend hours on end picking apart the minutiae of the movies and discussing them endlessly? Do you know all the trivia? Could you spend twenty minutes talking about one minute of screen time? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then I’ve got the perfect podcast for you.
I discovered The Star Wars Minute when someone on another podcast I listen to (for the life of me I can’t remember who it was on which podcast) mentioned being a guest on this one and briefly described the premise: the two hosts plus a guest spend twenty minutes or so discussing/dissecting/analyzing one minute of the movie Star Wars, starting at the beginning and working their way through the entire movie. Intrigued by this, I looked it up, and pretty quickly, I was hooked.
Is it even possible to spend many minutes talking about one minute of a movie? Most definitely. Even the episodes that cover the minutes of the opening crawlers and end credits are at least ten minutes long. When there’s something actually happening on screen, hosts Pete the Retailer and comic artist Alex Robinson and their guests have no trouble filling up to thirty minutes sharing their opinions, analysis, memories, and other comments. Sometimes what they have to say is insightful, sometimes silly, sometimes nostalgic, and it is always entertaining.
One of the things I enjoy most about this podcast is the recurring jokes and comments, like Alex’s apologies to Pete every time he refers to something from the prequel trilogy (“I know you don’t like it when we bring up the prequels, Pete, but…”), bad Alec Guiness impressions every time the number 94 comes up, and the frequent use of the Wookieepedia as a reference source for minor character backstory and other trivia. I also love that the hosts and I share similar views and opinions, and quite often as soon as I comment about something they are talking about, one of them will say the very same thing. They base their commentary on the original theatrical releases, none of that special edition nonsense, so that ranks them high in my book as well.
They have podcasted their way, one minute at a time, through Star Wars (none of that “A New Hope” nonsense from them, either!) and The Empire Strikes Back, and as of the time of writing they are almost finished with Return of the Jedi. I am only about an hour into the third movie, so I don’t know if they have shared their future plans or not. I’m not holding my breath for a Phantom Menace minute, not that I’d be that interested if they did, but I hope they continue in some fashion, because this is one of my favorite podcasts in my long list of subscriptions.
