I would like to say that I love Aidan Turner in any role he is in. He was great as Kili in The Hobbit, made a good Luke in The Mortal Instruments, and I will be tuning in to watch Poldark on PBS. However, the first and most memorable role I saw him in became a crushworthy character to me. BBC’s Being Human offered a new take on vampires, werewolves, and ghosts. It also produced John Mitchell.
Who is He?
John Mitchell is the vampire protagonist on BBC’s Being Human. He was played by Aidan Turner. John Mitchell was turned into vampire in during World War I. He lives with a ghost and a werewolf, who are his best friends. Mitchell (as he’s called on the show) always struggles to be a good person. Sometimes he succeeds, other times he fails miserably. But he’s still human on the inside.
Fun Fact:
Mitchell has an interesting job on the show: a hospital cleaner. Not what you imagine a vampire doing.
Why So Crushworthy?
Mitchell looks more like a man you see playing guitar at a bar on Saturday night. His fingerless gloves, plaid shirts, and sunglasses don’t scream vampire. But that’s actually what I like about him. Being Human put a different spin on being a supernatural. Mitchell is the anti-vampire in some ways. He doesn’t brood over human girls. He doesn’t dwell on being a tragic hero. He’s just Mitchell. I liked his laid-back attitude. It’s George the Werewolf who is overly dramatic all the time. Mitchell is one cool cat in every sense of the word.
Mitchell does have the vampire charm. That smile of his knocked my socks off. He normally gets what he wants on the show by cracking a few jokes and smiling. Mitchell is only nonchalant and chilled out on the surface. He’s constantly fighting against his vampire nature. He truly wants to be a good guy. Then there’s his protective, but genuine, friendships with George and Annie. He truly cares about them and really does do anything for them. His love for Annie sends him into purgatory to get her out. I loved how kind and loving he is towards her. The odds are against them but he still loved her. The show was great and so was Mitchell’s character. I’m surprised I haven’t written about him before now. I guess seeing the Poldark advertisements remind me of my crush. If you have the chance, watch BBC’s Being Human and bask in the glory that is Mitchell.
