Soon, the final installment of The Hobbit will be marching into theaters. Thoughts harken to the new movie and back to the original The Lord of The Rings trilogy. They take me back to my first LOTR crush. I highlighted Legolas last year but this time the true King gets his due. I mean, ruling over reunited kingdoms is no small feat.
Who is He?
Aragorn, son of Arathorn, is one the members of the Fellowship in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings trilogy. In the films, he was played by Viggo Mortensen. Aragorn becomes the new High King after helping to defeat Sauron and begins a new age of prosperity and peace. Before that he’s a wandering Ranger of the North making friends with elves, dwarves, hobbits, and wizards to help them take a ring to Mordor.
Fun Fact:
Before Aragorn was nicknamed Strider, Tolkien considered calling him “Trotter” for a long time.
Why So Crushworthy?
Aragorn is the man you can depend on. He is also ruggedly handsome. I like how lovely Legolas is but Aragorn is more my type. He looks good for a man of 87. Aragorn is one of the “still waters run deep” kind of character. He’s deeply emotional but he can’t express it most situations. He has to be tough to protect the hobbits. Yet, he sheds tears when he thinks Merry and Pippin are dead. He mourns over Boromir’s body. I loved him in the books but seeing Viggo Mortensen show his emotions in LOTR made me want to give him a hug. Another point in Aragorn’s favor is how loyal he is. He stands by all his friends in the Fellowship and even keeps the flame alive for Arwen until they can be together. I’m not an Arwen fan but I admire his enduring love.
Aragorn is a very selfless and humble man. No one knows he was even descended from kings until later in the book. He’s willing to sacrifice his own happiness with Arwen for the greater good. Aragorn also has the heart of a lion. The ring could not corrupt him or sway him from his purpose. I still wonder why Tolkien never wrote him and Éowyn getting together. They’re well matched for each other. Anyway, Aragorn is still one of the best and most crushworthy characters from The Lord of the Rings.
